For this paper, I have researched three careers that I was interested in learning more

about. I will cover, a Household Manager under the category of Resource Management, an Event

and Hospitality Director under the category, Hospitality, and finally, for Interior Design, I will

explore a Director of Exhibit and Design and Production. My hope is by researching job

interests, I can better understand what career I might be best suited for after graduation.

Resource Management covers a wide range of career categories from financial managers

to life coaching. I discovered that a Household Manager falls under this category and it covers

everything from being a personal assistant to someone, prepping their meals, food shopping,

light housework, scheduling appointments, buying gifts, driving, nanny duties and much more.

In order for a person to qualify for this position, the employer is looking for someone that can

make things happen, that organizes, brain storms, follows systems and creates new ones where

needed, loves working with people and who’s ultimate goal is ensuring a smooth schedule for

their employer. “Because the field deals with complex issues, professionals must demonstrate

interpersonal, problem solving, and analytical skills” (Kato & Elias, 2015). This job sounded

appealing to my twenty year old self who is not married and does not have children. I think that I

would really have enjoyed a job like this while in school and much younger. I would have

wanted an opportunity like this to earn and save money, especially if it required travel.

As I was browsing Hospitality careers that I might find fun, I came across and Event and

Hospitality Director for a confidential company. It seems that with less than a four year degree

and experience in hospitality, I could run a private Inn. The owner was seeking someone with

skills like quality listening, customer service, verbal communication, housekeeping, quality

focus, telephone skills, resolving conflict, customer focus, reporting skills and decision making

capabilities. I couldn’t help but picture the fictional character Lorelai Gilmore from the show

Gilmore Girls. She ran an Inn and later owned her own Inn. Everything I listed above, are skills

that she used in each episode. “The larger the organization, the more personnel it takes to run a

smooth hospitality venture. Hospitality is a service-oriented industry, and the service is provided

by people” (Kato & Elias, 2015). I think this would be a neat opportunity for someone who loves

to be helpful and a homebody because as an employee you would not leave the premise often. I

also loved that this job opportunity offered it to an eager and talented person or couple.

For my third career, I researched Interior Design and found a job position for Director of

Exhibit Design and Production. For this particular job, I would direct and oversee the production

of an exhibit for a children’s museum in Texas. Qualifications that my employer would expect

would be, a Bachelors degree with Interior Design focus. “Museum exhibit designers create

displays that showcase artifacts or works of art in a way that is pleasing, emphasizes the object,

keeps if safe, and preserves it” (Kato & Elias, 2015). I would be expected to have experience

with, managing and coordinating teams for different departments, create and participate in

exhibit projects, monitor exhibit maintenance, write and file reports, plan yearly budgets, obtain

bids, oversee fabrication, installation, repairs and control quality of safety standards set. I think

that if I were to ever delve into the world of interior design, this would be one aspect that would

interest me. I like that it requires working at a stationary place and the client is the same but the

exhibits change.

Overall I learned that there are many opportunities throughout Family Consumer Science

where I would be able to have a fulfilling career that would enable me to be financially stable.

Beyond the necessity of income I would also want my career to be interesting, fun and above all

challenging. I think the three carer options that I explored in Resource Management, Hospitality,

and Interior Design fit those needs.
