Syllabus

Introduction

Mathematical modelling of physical problems:

 Governing differential equations (equilibrium equations) and boundary conditions of


one dimensional (1D), 2D and 3D problems in structural mechanics- Bar, beams,
columns, plates, plane stress, plane strain and axisymmetric problems, problems in
three dimensional elasticity
 Energy based mathematical formulation of one dimensional (1D), 2D and 3D
problems in structural mechanics

Approximate solutions to governing differential equations

 Weighted residual methods- Collocation, least square , Galerkin and modified Galerkin
methods
 Variational methods-Principle of stationary potential, Rayleigh–Ritz method

One dimensional Finite element formulation using weak form:

 Concepts of domain discretization,


 1 D bar element-linear and quadratic elements, Lagrange shape function,
element formulation in natural co-ordinates, iso-parametric mapping,
numerical integration for 1D elements, Apllications to truss analysis, 1D fluid
flow problems
 Beam elements based on Euler Bernoulli beam theory, analysis of beams,
concept of consistent load vector, finite element analysis of beams and
columns

Two- and three-dimensional finite elements:

 Finite element formulations based on stationarity of a functional


 Triangle elements, rectangular elements, general quadrilateral elements and iso-
parametric mapping, Serendipty approach of constructing shape functions, Solid
elements, Numerical integration
 Applications to structural mechanics and fluid flow.
