Fitness Center Target Audience and Thought Process
When coming up with an idea for a target audience, one of the first things I had to
consider is the parameters of the project. We were instructed that this fitness center was not a
new addition to a building or a personal area. Instead, the center is intended to be thought of as a
their building somewhere that they would like for me to remodel into a fitness center to meet
their specific fitness needs. Considering this, I chose to imagine that a small retirement home has
asked me to install a fitness center for them in a pre-existing room within their building. The
room has two doors and three large windows that cover 3 of the four walls of the room. They
have asked for the elderly residents to be able to get cardiovascular exercise and do yoga, which
they believe will help with the general health and well being of the residents. With these
expectations in place, I am now ready to design the center. First, for the residents to be able to
log their use of the center, there is a check-in desk. Beside the desk is a water fountain for them
to stay properly hydrated throughout their workout, as well as cabinets on either side of the desk
for storage of personal belongings during exercise. Since the two main uses of the area are for
cardiovascular exercise and yoga, I have included three treadmills, two exercise bikes, two stair
climbers, two yoga mats and two exercise balls. These pieces of equipment provide a wide range
of possibilities for cardiovascular exercise, which is good in case different patients have
restrictive medical conditions and different abilities. The yoga mats and exercise balls are perfect
for many kinds of yoga and stretching. The exact number of equipment pieces within the room
are perfect considering the 24’x36’ room perimeter, as well as the small population of residents
