In the first year, you will lay the foundation for your further studies in International Sociology. Besides
introductory courses in sociology, you will follow introductory courses in other disciplines that have common
ground with sociology: political science, psychology and economics. You will also learn more about academic
skills and research methods.

In the second year, you will choose a major consisting of four substantive courses, a sociological research
project, an internship and a Bachelor's thesis. You can choose from:

Culture in comparative perspective

Social risks in a changing world

You will finish the second year with a sociological research project of your choice in the field of your major. You
will present your research during the Student Research Symposium Sociology, where all students of the
Bachelor’s and (pre)Master’s program of Sociology meet.

The third year leaves room for your interests, ambitions and talents. In the first semester, you will choose a
number of minor courses and electives. Additionally, you will do a mandatory internship that allows you to
practice your skills. To conclude your studies, you will write a Bachelor's thesis. Both your internship and
Bachelor’s thesis will be in the field of your major.

As a sociologist, you will be trained to become an expert in the field of social issues. These issues often occur
in education, government or cultural institutions. Some graduates, for example, become policy advisors at
municipalities, whereas others become trainees at European organizations. Commercial companies and
organizations employ graduates in sociology as well. Think, for example, of data analysts at insurers and
energy companies, researchers at market research firms, or consultants in the field of technology and
society. Additionally, sociologists work as researchers within scientific institutions, as third-level lecturers in
sociology or art and culture, or as teachers of social studies in secondary education. Sociologists are also
employed as journalists or opinion formers.

Dutch law requires you to have adequate
health and third-party liability
insurance. Organizing your health and liability
insurance is your own responsibility. A good place
to start is by asking your current insurer if your stay
in the Netherlands is covered by your existing
policy. If not, you will need to take out
private insurance, for which we recommend IPS or
AON.

You are also free to find your own private

insurance, but keep in mind that your policy must
meet the health and liability insurance
requirements stipulated by Dutch law. If you are
planning to find a part-time job, you might also be
required to take out Dutch public health insurance.
