Dear Mr.

Neace,
My habit has always been working on my music. I take a lot of pride in how everything
sounds so I sometimes find myself working tirelessly over the most minute details. Being a
drummer, a lot of what I play is based on time signature and rhythm. So, when I'm listening to
something that made, I always have to make sure everything is timed perfectly. To achieve
perfect timing, I have to use computer software because it is impossible for a person to hit every
beat perfectly. Every drummer strives to play a perfect rhythm, but human nature makes it
virtually impossible. Recently, I have been learning the piano and incorporating the keyboard
into a lot of my music. Adding a new flavor is very exciting for me so this music habit of mine
has been kind of crazy lately. As I look ahead in my academic career, I can see myself trying to
create my own major of music business. I feel that my love of music and my interest in the
industry could blossom into a career that I would really enjoy.
My long term goal with this is to end up in the industry, but I do still have smaller goals
that I would like to accomplish while I am still here in Tuscaloosa. Tuscaloosa is a hub of live
music and entertainment and I hope to capitalize on this aspect of the town. Like I mentioned
the other day in class “I want to be the best drummer in town.” This is a far fetched goal to say
the least, but if you shoot for the moon you might land amongst the stars. If I could be a member
of a rockin bar band by the beginning of my junior year, I would be ecstatic. Looking further
ahead, I plan on being a musician for as long as my body will allow. Yes, I do strive for success
in the industry, but I feel that playing and listening is one of the best ways to keep me in tune
with what is going on in the music world. (See what I did there.)
For me, being in tune with the music world has never been a challenge. I was exposed
to the world of music at a young age. In my youth, my grandma would give me her old records.
Before long I had a little collection of old music. From there, my curiosity coaxed me into visiting
a record store to pick out some new sounds that I liked. I picked up the drums at age 10 and it
was off to the races from there. Playing music is what I enjoy most, so it just makes sense to me
that I would make a career out of the art. I have always thought there was something magical
about a big group of people vibing to their favorite song. That is a feeling that I want to achieve
at some point in my life.
Best,
Briggs Standing
