BOOK EXTENSION ACTIVITY - LESSON PLAN

1. PRE-K/CCSD K-2ND GRADE CORE STANDARDS:

- L.PK.7 Identify and/or sort plants and animals by observable characteristics.
- E.PK.1 Observe and identify weather from day to day.

2. OBJECTIVES:
- Students will be able to identify animals by their characteristics and features.
- Students will be able to recognize different environments and the animals that live in it.
- Students will be able to differentiate environments and why animals live in them.
- Students will be able to recognize the animal groups.

3. MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT:
- The book “Peek Inside Animal Homes”
- Mini stuffed animals
- Fake plants and toys that resemble animal environments (stables, long plants, cotton
balls for snow)
4. TEACHING:
- Before anything, create the small environments for the mini stuffed animals. Such as
creating a small jungle with the leaves, creating a farm with the stables and mini toy
house, creating snow with snow balls, etc. Have the small environments ready for
students to start their animal home activity.
- Read aloud to students “Peek Inside Animal Homes”. Make sure to have students
answer the questions when reading the text on the flaps from the book. After students
guess the answer, open the flap to reveal the animal underneath! While reading the
book, have students interact with you and each other to talk about the different type of
animals in their environments and what makes them different.
- After reading the book, take out the mini stuffed animals you have. Give out the stuffed
animals to random students. When handing them out, have students find their
environment around the classroom. This activity will help them distinguish what their
environment looks like and how different it is from others.

5. CLOSURE:
- Students were able to distinguish all the different types of animals.
- Students were able to find the animals environment around the classroom.
- Students were able to guess the animal behind the book flaps.
- Students were able to as well differentiate the different weather that impacts the animal’s
environment.
