This month | want to start by paying tribute to.a good fiend of mine who died recently; Max Wang, Most of you. | suspect, will not have known Max. He was lifelong modeller, building his fist model, a Revell 1/32 P-38 atthe tender age of 10, nd his love affair with modeling began. He was a founding member of the oldest and longest running model club in Taiwan, CAMO Modelling Group, and became fiends with modellers and rmanufacturersall over the world, and first met him in 2014 at Euro Militaire. His personal specialism was dioramas and in 2010he founded the company Diopark, dedicated to producing good quality injection moulded styrene diorama ‘accessories for modellers. His enthusiasm for modelling and for life never waivered the whole time knew him, and he was always happy, positive and eager to help anyone in the hobby. Certainly, he helped me. He dd not have a lotto do with aircraft modelling, so! hope you will forgive me using my editorial to pay tribute to him, but he was my friend and his death i a great loss to the wider hobby of scale modelling, He willbe missed. ‘Turning to this month's issue this month we welcome more ‘new authors to SAM, including the supremely talented Robert Blokker and Daniel Zamarbide Suarez. Steve Di Nucci returns to SAM with an excellent conversion of the SH-2G Seasprite to ‘a Royal Australian Navy SH-2G(A), and Lt. After looking at photos of Su-24s parked on various aprons and seeing wings both swept and extended on parked aircraft, ‘went with the most common; extended, ‘Once you have chosen your wings you sandwich them between the upper and lower central fuselage. The wings fit wel, but the top and bottom ofthe fuselage didn't quite line up.To solve this, set one side and letit cure, then lined up the other side and it pretty much set right with just a litte fettling required on the joint. ‘The cockpit is next and for such a small scale, itis very nicely detailed. Controls and instruments are provided ina mix of relief and decals, and although Idon't usually like decals for cockpits, they work well in this case. Items were painted as lwent. The seats did not quite fit, trim alitle off the inside to get a good fit. There are no belts inthe kit, either moulded on or decals, so! painted them on which worked well ‘enough. When al that was done, attached the top and bottom halves of the fuselage section around the cockpit. Try as | might, | ‘could not get them to fit properly. clamped the top and bottom with reverse- ‘rip tweezers and added some polycement and left them to cure, Once they had | sanded the step in the joint back, filled it where necessary, and re-scribed the detail ‘The fit problem, of course, transferred to the fit of the nose cone and the fit of the whole section to the main fuselage. But ‘nothing filing and sanding couldn't fix The tal end of the fuselage, withthe two big exhaust nozzles, isa singe resin piece. Fit was generally good, and Icarried on with the tail plane and stabilizers. These. ‘were fine, and ike the rest ofthe kit, the overall detail was great, with finely engraved lines. masked off the cockpit and ventral glazing and sprayed the underside light ‘rey. The fine detail ofthe kt realy ‘came into its ovn here and aided inf and highlighting details. I set the Su-24 aside to cure and started ‘work on the base. For this | used the aforementioned PAG-14 sets from Armory. These are reat, there is alittle Nash around ‘each piece but nothing significant. On the ‘upper surface there isa superb diamond pattern, just the lke the real ones, and subtly done, so much so that you will need to be careful when using them tomake sure they are the right way up. [hada thin piece of dense MOF handy, which leut toa suitable size, then I started laying the'slabs, securing each with a dot of CA, at aslight angle to add visual interest. ASI got to the ‘edges, simply cropped them off. When | ‘was done, I sprayed the while thing black. Next I mixed up a mid-arey and picked out random slabs, then added a touch of blue and picked out some different slabs. repeated this, changing the colour slightly, until [had painted the whole thing and hada good variety of greys. 1 liked the ‘effect, but there was perhaps. bit too much variation, so I mixed a light grey and thinned it heavily, and sprayed the entire thing in a few light, translucent coates to bilendit all in and make it look a litte less like a quilt. The variation was still there, but now it was alot more realistic. It looked OK atthis stage, but a bit fat and lifeless, so | mixed an oll wash from brown and black ‘and washed the whole thing, adding more ‘on some panels here and there.
