STUDENTS WILL: understand the interview process for scholarships/universities in the US, and
how this may differ from interviews for Chinese universities
• Ask students what they think a scholarship interview looks like. Ask them if they’ve ever
been interviewed before or have had their family members interviewed before (5
minutes)
• Go over some body language that an interviewer may do (such head nodding, smiling,
arm crossing, poker face, etc.) (5 minutes)
• Will show students a video on how to do well in an interview:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHDrj0_bMQ0 (5 minutes)
• Ask if the interview process is different in China than their idea of an English interview.
Introduce students to mythical scholarship that they will be conducting their interview for
in the US context. Pass out attached worksheet and ask students to get in pairs (5
minutes)
• Have the students conduct interviews with each other, practicing being the interviewer
and the interviewee, and rating each other from 1(needs some work)-5 (did really well).
The interviewer must write their interviewee’s answers, then must justify their ratings in
writing by writing down areas for improvement in their partner’s answers. (10 minutes)
