LEVEL: Intermediate-Advanced

TIME: 25 minutes

LANGUAGE FOCUS: learning key words to use in describing their family and family roles

SKILLS: Writing and Speaking

MATERIALS: Printed copies of the following two worksheets for each student, a computer with
internet capabilities, projecting device, a timer

OVERVIEW SNAPSHOT: students will fill out their own family trees and reflect on family
expectations

STUDENTS WILL: understand how to describe family roles and describe themselves in their
family tree

BEFORE CLASS: Students will view the movie ‘Coco’ and write any questions related to
vocabulary, grammar or family trees

PROCEDURE (25 Minutes):


•   Students will complete a storyline map with teacher on the board, to confirm
understanding of storyline and characters in ‘Coco’. Students will then give the teacher
their ideas on the moral(s) taught in Coco. Teacher will write these on the board (10
minutes)

•   Teacher will hand out attached worksheet to students, and have students complete the
questions with their personal experience (5 minutes)

•   Students will get together in pairs and discuss the questions amongst themselves writing
brief notes about agreements and disagreements(5 minutes)

•   Students will then jointly write a brief letter to Miguel advising him on what to do. Some
students will share this aloud in class (5 minutes)
1.) What is one job one of your family members does?

2.) Does your family have a head of family? If so, who is the head of your family?

3.) What do you want to be when you grow up? Does your Family and/or parents expect you to
be in a certain profession?

4.) If you were friends with Miguel and he asked you for advice on whether he should become a
musician or not, would you tell him to be a musician or follow what his family advises him to
do?
