College and Career Exploration

The three options I had to choose two from where to meet a military recruiter, visit a

college, and interviewing someone currently in a career I would like to explore. I decided to pick

visiting a college and interviewing someone in a career I would like to pursue. First, it was hard

to pick just two of the three options because doing all three would have been pretty cool but I

decided the other two were the better options because I have never had a real desire to join the

military. Second, I chose to go visit a college because I have wanted to go see Jessup for a

while now because it was one of the schools shown at the career fair as well as in the school

office and because I have always had an interest to go see what the campus was like. Finally, I

chose to interview someone in the career I thought about pursuing because my mom, Kendra

Brummer, is the Drama Club director for Notre Dame School and since I have been apart of the

program for so long I considered possibly following in her footsteps and doing the same but had

some questions I wanted to ask her about the job.

I have been interested in going to William Jessup University for a long time. I had heard

visited it once with choir and since seen it at the career fair at school and in the school office. So

when I got the chance to go visit a college I decided I would like to go back again with two of my

friends and my mom. The first time I went there I really liked it and really wanted to go there so I

jumped at the chance to go again. The school looked the same with its beautiful buildings,

dorms, gym, and small grassy areas to sit and study. It is a smaller school that for every one

professor there is twelve students which means that no student gets lost in a sea of other
students. I like that it is a christian private school because I am catholic and since my religion is

very important to me, it is nice to know that I would have others around me who understands

that.

When it comes to the schools environment I could tell that everyone got along really well

with each other. There was a lot of options for men and women’s sports. One thing that always

stood out to me was there choir and theater programs. When I went the first time I got to hear

the choir sing and they all sounded so amazing together. Not only does the school offer the

degree I wanted, a bachelors in teaching history, but it also offered many different activities for

the students to participate in. One that will stand out in my brain forever is this zombie versus

humans game that the students play at one point in the year where the students if they want to

participate get assigned roles as zombies and humans and the zombies have to try and infect

the humans; the tour guide said that a lot of the students all get really involved and that it is one

of the most fun things. I felt very safe in the school and I could not recommend it enough to

others who are interested in a smaller university because it is amazing.

Next I had to interview my mom who has been the director of Notre Dame School’s

Drama Club program since I was in fourth grade. One of the first things that I had asked her was

what it was like to have the job she does. She said that “It is a very great job and that it could

also be very stressful at the same time but it is all worth it.” One thing I had never really quite

known though was her full explanation of why my mom and my dad had volunteered for the job;

my mom directs while my dad does the set design. I learned that when they had seen how sad I

was when the previous director was leaving and that there might not have been a drama

program the next year they decided that they were going to volunteer for the job because they

saw how happy it made me and how it made me come out of my shell. Since my mom still

continues to run the program after I have been gone she does it for the students still there
including my siblings for the very same reason. She does the job that would be really hard for

others so that the children and students can have an outlet to be creative and make the family

that they have now.

Throughout the process of these two activities I learned a lot including about myself.

While at Jessup I had a great time and felt really great at the school and it has so much to offer.

Yet no matter how much I loved it there I decided that it wasn’t going to be the best option for

me and I am now going to Laramie County Community College in Wyoming because it gives me

the chance to grow as well as be close to my grandparents since I will be living with them near

the school. Interviewing my mom on her job as a director for a second through eighth grader

drama program I got the chance to learn more about the job and also understand the mentality

behind the job. I now am going to work towards my teaching credential to become a history

teacher so that in my adult life I could come back to California and become a history teacher for

middle schoolers and hopefully take over the director position after both of my siblings have

graduated from the school so that I can continue the work my mom has accomplished and

hopefully be as great as her as teaching such wonderful children.
