Maximum Horizontal Shear Force calculation (Seismic & Wind Load)

1) Longitudinal Direction

a) Seismic Loading (IS 1893)

FLS = Seismic coefficient x Sesmic Load Ah = 0.12
= Ah x W W = 110231.1 lb

FLS = 13227.73 lb

b) Wind Loading (IS 875)

FLW = Wind coefficient x Exposed Area x Wind Pressure
= Cw x (Do x Z + (0.785 x Do )/2) x Pwind Cw =
2
0.7
Z = 78.74 inch
FLW = 992.5103 lb Do = 62.99213 inch
Pwind = 0.21755 psi

Therefore Maximum of both is used in further calculations

Flmax = 13227.73 lb

And maximum Moment is Mlmax = Z * FLmax

Mlmax = 1041554 lb.inch

2) Transverse Direction

a) Seismic Loading (By UBC)

FTS = Seismic coefficient x Sesmic Load Ah = 0.1375
= 0.5 x Ah x W W = 110231.1 lb

FTS = 7578.39 lb

b) Wind Loading (IS 875)

FTW = Wind coefficient x Exposed Area x Wind Pressure
= 0.5 x Cw x (Do x L + 2 x (h x Do)) x Pwind Cw = 0.7
FTW = 1061.246 lb Do = 62.99213 inch
L = 189.7638 inch
h = 15.74803 inch
Pwind = 0.21755 psi

Therefore Maximum of both is used in further calculations

FTmax = 7578.39 lb
And maximum Moment is MTmax = Z * FTmax
MTmax = 596723.6 lb.inch

Calculation of Forces due to seismic and wind loading

Calculation of Forces due to operating & test weight

Operating weight = Wo = 110231.1 lb

Test Weight = WT = 110231.1 lb

a) Due to Operating weight

Qo = 55115.56 lb

b) Due to Test weight

QT = 55115.56 lb

Maximum loads against which the saddle is designed

Greater of Q1, Q2 , or QT

QT = 55115.56 lb

Q1 = Qo + QR = 56971.49 lb

Q2 = Qo + QL = 56545.59 lb

QL = (FL x B)/Ls = 1430.0 lb

QR = (3 x FT x B)/A = 1855.932 lb

Therefore, Max. load Q = 56971.49 lb

Design of Wear plate or Top Flange

Saddle splitting force fh = K1 x Q

K1 = 0.815583 fh =

fh = 387.2084 lb

Bending Moment Mb = 762.2213 lb-inch

Flange thickness tf = 0.591 inch

Stress induced = 13113.46 psi

Allowable stress = 18000 psi (0.6 x Sy)

Design of Web plate thickness

Use 0.5" thick plate min. ( i.e. assume tw = 0.5" )

Calculate the max. allowable height h of a 1" wide
strip column 0.5" thick under PII
tw = 0.394 inch

Area = 1" x 0.5 " Here P = f

= 0.393701 inch2
Min. radius of gyration k = 0.289 x tw
= 0.11378 inch

fh/Area = 144707.6
Rearranging the equation
We get h = tw * SQRT [(1500/f)(18000 tw - f )]

h = 63.42459 inch
C = 19.68504 inch

Design of Base plate

Check for bearing pressure

Area = AxB
Ab = 3038.006 inch2

Bearing pressure = Q = 18.75292 psi

Ab

Allowable bearing stress = 750 psi

Check for bending stress

Bending stress induced = 6945.527 psi

Design of Rib plate

Determining the number of stiffeners (rip plates) and its thickness,

An approximate approach for determining the number of stiffeners, N is : N = A / 24 + 1 (empirical formula)

where A = total length of base plate , in.

Therefore N = 9.038058
Using Stiffeners N = 10

The stiffener (rip plate) thickness (ts) is 3/8" (9.5 mm) min. for vessels up to 6 ft (1830 mm) in diameter , and 1/2 " for vessels w
Therefore using tr = 0.5 inch

Baseplate-Stiffeners fillet weld clearance, cl = Min. (tr , tb) = 0.500 inch

The stiffeners are equaly spaced by, Ss = [A - 2 x (0.5 x tr + cl)]/(N-1)

Ss = 21.26815 inch

Use rip plate width, Rw = 1/2 x [B - (2 x cl + tw)] = 7.18 inch
