THE POWER OF LANGUAGE 2

One of the greatest qualities of mankind is being able to communicate, from

smiling, frowning and speaking all ways of communicating, the ability to communicate through

language is the most powerful. We as humans can communicate through written words and

speech, emotions are expressed. Language and the processing languages is what separates

mankind from the rest of the animal kingdom. lets us discover new places. Language is so

powerful we have to be careful how we use it.

The need for students to learn how to use language at an early age is important,

they will need this skill for the rest of their life. Developing language allows them to be an

interictal part of society, not to say that if a child has a disability such as being deaf or mute, sign

language would be another form of communicating that will benefits these children. Opens the

world up to the student and sets them up for possibly learning a new language. Language

acquisition can open the door employment. Being able to articulate language will make the

students a fit in today’s society and allow society to prosper in growth. Starting from the basics

of morphology will allow the student to learning root words through the process of studying

sight words. Morphology will stay with the student throughout the student’s school career, even

now as we prepare to be teachers, we are still learning the process of morphology. When students

can use grammar and semantics in the correctly in a sentence then the use of pragmatics can also

become very natural to the student, knowing which way a conversation is going to turn, when a

joke is appropriate or the way body language can affect the audiences point of view of the

speaker.
THE POWER OF LANGUAGE 3

When it comes to learning a new language the earlier the better for most students.

The first seven years are going to be the best time to acquire a new language. Sounds and the

brain are still being developed in this time frame. During the pre-teen age the brain had already

developed to the first language which makes the acquisition a bit more difficult to learn, none the

less the student should learn as soon as possible. The young students could have a difficulty if

not exposed to first person interaction, those that are in front of media to learn a language will

have a slower acquisition to those that have a human interaction associated with the new

language. The student can be confused though if there they are exposed to one language at home

and then another in school, not having enough of one language will not allow them to fully grasp

the basics of the languages being learned. Motivation is another factor that interacts with the

student’s ability to learn a second language. Wanting to learn at older age is going to different

from a younger student that either may not have a choice. Having to adapt to a new country

could also be a motivation factor that is going to play a role in whether students can acquire a

second language.

Vocabulary knowledge is will go hand in hand with reading, understanding that is

going being read and how to break down words in smaller ones to gain the knowledge are the

key factors to reading comprehension. Morphology plays a role in language acquisition but also

in reading. Decoding a word to make out the sounds and syllables can help students relate sounds

of words to make out what other words are going to sound like. When it comes to reading

comprehension, the student can struggle without the basic knowledge of how words and

sentences come together. Reading comprehension is directly related to the result of active

reading, vocabulary knowledge and the fluency in which the student is able to read. Being able to

retain the information that is being read, and expression. The need to practice reading will result

in the less time that the student will need to take understanding a word. This where active

reading comes into play.

Developing language and other forms of language can be very complex in the

process. The understanding that all students are all different in the way that they learn or process

information, some might be the star of the class and another could be lost in the sauce, we as

future and active teachers need to recognize what the student’s needs are. Understanding the

rules and techniques will give us the tools to reach these students.
