This interview has proved to be valuable to me in multiple ways, and I am very grateful
for the positive reflection Dr. Leung has given concerning the field of pediatrics. Throughout the
interview, I was able to gain a more accurate perspective towards not only pediatric medicine but
the medical field in general.
One of the main things I intended to find out through this interview was the balance
between work and social life as a pediatrician. As I have mentioned in my previous assessments,
one of the main things I am looking for in my future profession is a good balance between
private and professional life. Family is the most important thing for me and I do not want to go
through years of training and studying merely to spend most of my time doing things like
surgeries. Although I respect surgeons for taking their time to help patients, I can’t see myself
standing for hours and missing any future, important familial events. Therefore, Dr. Leung’s
positive insight into a pediatrician’s life helped me to further pursue this profession.
Although being a pediatrician would still require a great deal of time and attention, I love
children and spending time with them will give me nothing but happiness. On that note, I was
also curious to find how Dr. Leung handles uncooperative kids. She mentioned how once one
gets used to being around kids all the time, he/she will learn to find a way to make the child
smile and happy about the visit. It is challenging to get the kids to enjoy their time at the
doctor’s, but it all lies on how the pediatrician treats the child, says Dr. Leung.
Moreover, I wanted to learn about Austin College from Dr. Leung as she received her
undergraduate education from there. I was applying to Austin College at the time and it proved
to be very helpful to have interviewed a successful undergraduate from this college. According
to Dr. Leung, the college was somewhat secluded from the city, but it allowed her to have a great
experience. She also completed her medical studies at UT Southwestern, so similar to Austin
College, I was able to receive extremely helpful feedback concerning the university.
One of the highlights of the interview was definitely having her kid in the same room as
the interview. Her boy was about a year old and was very adorable. Although it was difficult to
be professional with a baby in the room, he gave an interesting twist to the interview. I was able
to pick him up and play with him, which calmed my nerves. I have thought a lot about the
interview but never thought I would have the opportunity to play with the doctor’s child. It was
also exciting and intriguing to see how her family was there. Her husband is the receptionist, so
the boy is either with his mom or his dad. Since family is something I admire the most, it was
lovely to see such a beautiful and positive atmosphere. Even though the interview was helpful, I
thought seeing the positive relationship she has with her family was just as helpful to me because
it gave me confidence in achieving the perfect balance between work and family.
In addition, I was very shocked but equally glad to have heard that she only works from 8
am to 5 pm since she has her own clinic. I did not expect her to say this but she mentioned how
she loves her job but once the 5 pm time hits, she goes home to spend time with her family.
Compared to other medical professions, working for 9 hours is one of the best things ever.
Obviously, she still has to work at home, but she mentioned how having a private clinic allows
one to have more flexible timings.
This brings me to talk about how I will use the information I learned from the interview.
For example, I have always hoped to have my own clinic someday and seeing how advantageous
it is made me truly happy. Therefore, I will continue to hope to have a private clinic in the future
in order to have a final say in decisions and have more freedom in making my schedule. I will
also base my college decision partly on what Dr. Leung said because she said even though some
colleges, like Baylor, have a great name compared to a small-scale college, like Austin College,
she says how sometimes having a small college is more beneficial because one can get more one
on one time with the professor.
Dr. Leung has provided valuable advice, and I can surely say I left the interview better
than I thought I would. Being with her child, learning about her thoughts on different colleges,
and learning about the balance between work and social life has shaped my perspective
positively and accurately. I am very grateful to be part of this program and to have the
opportunity to meet successful pediatricians who are willing to take time and share knowledge
with aspiring professionals.
