INTRODUCTION

Technology nowadays is almost everything. We use technology for works, in appliances,

in business, in transportation and many more. But the only study that the researchers will be tackle
is the technology for studying. Nowadays students are more involved in using technology for their
academics. Especially in doing their homework, projects and researches. This research will be more
interesting for the researchers make their topic for all of the SHS STEM students in Lyceum of the
Philippines University Laguna

All of the machines even the internet is created by technology. This gives a more
convenient way of living because technology is made for our industry. The researchers research
study titled about the Impact of Technology to the Academics of SHS STEM Students of the
Lyceum of the Philippines University Laguna. Students in our modern society is blessed because
technology had been created unlike on our past years of living students are only using printed media
like books, newspapers, magazines and other written articles which makes their data inadequate
results to a limited idea. Most of the students has the access in technology they have their own
phones and gadgets and this will be part of study in knowing what will be the impact of technology
for those STEM students that’s aspiring to be one of the future professionals in our society.

The research is all about the positive and negative impacts of technology to the students.

There are many impacts when we say the word ‘technology’ but it varies when we are
pertaining to a specific field like the impact of technology to the academics or simply the studies of
an individual student. Technology also motivates and engages the learner. When students have a
choice in their assignment, see the relevancy, or can self-assess with teacher feedback intertwined,
student motivation increases Daniels (2002); Ganske et al., (2003); Harvey (2002). Technology
lends itself to all of the above.

Also in the article, “Nonfiction Inquiry: Using Real Reading and Writing to Explore the
World” (2002), Harvey concluded that the vehicle for increasing relevancy and motivation was
through surrounding kids with compelling nonfiction. Researching online or using a CD-ROM
allows students to search for information they are passionate about learning. Students can make
choices when navigating online, which is engaging for learners. When students are given more
choice in their tasks, those tasks are more meaningful and increase the students’ intrinsic motivation
Jordan & Hendricks (2002).

The researchers wanted to know the impact of technology to the academics of SHS STEM
Students of the Lyceum of the Philippines University – Laguna. In order to know the specific
impact to give a more effective and efficient solution.

This study aims to know the impact of technology to the students at the said school.
Specifically, this study attempts to answer the following questions:

1. How do the students use the internet in studying?

2. What kind of gadgets that the students are using?

3. What factors affects the performance of the student?

4. What is the negative impact of using technology to the students?

5. What is the positive impact of using technology to the students?

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This section includes the ideas, finished thesis, generalization or conclusion that is
related about the researcher’s topic. Those that were included in this chapter helps in familiarizing
information that is relevant and similar to the present study.
According to Ms Myra Joy P. Belasio (2005). "The effects of technology to students’
study habit are its intelligence and they cannot help their parents do the household chores because of
being focused to the technology especially the internet, computers and mobiles".
Da’lij (2008) conducted a study entitled as “The effect of using Mathematics software
produced locally on second grade intermediate female students’ academic achievement in Riyadh”.
The study aims to identify the effect of using multimedia software produced locally on second
grade intermediate female students’ academic achievement in mathematics. The study sample
consisted of 70 female students divided equally into two experimental groups studying by the
locally produced software and a control group studying the traditional method. The study revealed
no statistically-significant differences at the significance level of 0.05 between the experimental
and control groups.
Even though the popularity of virtual education is on the rise, there is still much debate as
to whether or not it is equal to or better than a traditional classroom. A hurdle for proponents of
virtual education is the lack of evidence to determine whether it is effective on student learning and
performance Miron; Urschel (2012). One criticism is that online students typically do.
Researchers have also sought to find the negative impacts on student's achievement
through the use of technology. Technology has not always been promising within the classroom.
Technology is a tool that should enhance student learning and achievement. Computer-assisted
instruction (CAI) is a widely studied and supported method of teaching. Numerous review articles
have been published showing small but positive effects on student achievement Vogel, Greenwood
Ericksen, Cannon-Bowers, Bowers, (2006, 105).

Steve Johnson (2005), in his nationally bestselling book Everything Bad is Good for You,
posited that technology is making us more intelligent due our means of obtaining, interpreting, and
processing information. Many studies have discussed how technology affects our brains and impacts
how much its use affects the way that we think and perform.
Abu Yunis (2005) conducted a study entitled “The effectiveness of multimedia software
to teach Geometry in the second grade of preparatory schools” aimed at identifying to what extent
multimedia software helps in the academic achievement of the preparatory school students in the
subject of Geometry and its remembrance. The sample of experimental study included 300 male and
female students divided into two experimental and control groups each group consisted of 150 male
and female students. The experimental group was taught by multimedia software program that
contain a content of the Geometry unit identified by the Ministry of Education in the Syrian Arab
Republic. The results showed significant statistical differences in the average of academic
achievement of the experimental and control groups in the test conducted after the experiment in
favor of experimental group.
An article at Science Direct says that “Mobile devices and collaborative learning
environments are common tools in education but not all collaborative learning is structured the
same. This study evaluated student learning in three different collaborative learning environments,
both with and without mobile technology, to assess students' engagement, critical thinking, and
attitudes toward collaborative learning. The results indicate that mobile technology is associated
with positive student perceptions of collaborative learning but with increased disengagement by
students during class. In addition, the level of students' critical thinking was more closely associated
with the tools used to construct written responses than with the collaborative learning environment
style. Students constructing paragraph responses on a mobile device demonstrated significantly less
critical thinking than those who used a computer keyboard or wrote responses by hand.”

Also an article at Science Direct says that “Prior research on this topic has yielded
contradictory results: while some authors find a positive effect of sports participation on academic
outcomes, others report a negative impact. Accordingly, the authors seek to provide a more rounded
understanding of these mixed findings. The empirical evidence is provided by a panel dataset of
Page

undergraduate students who studied at a Spanish University over the period 2008–2014. The
academic performance of sports participants are compared with those of non-participants in terms of
their outcomes in the form of grades. Results reveal that participation in formal sporting activities is
associated with higher grades among students at this university. The analysis reinforces the idea that
apart from their health benefits for practitioners, sporting activities lead to the attainment of the
performance goals to which higher education institutions aspire.”
An article at Scopus says that “The appropriate use of technology in an educational setting
has been shown to help students improve their grades. However, without highly trained teachers, the
tool can be rendered ineffective. Fifty-three percent of teachers nationwide use technology in their
classrooms, and more than half of school age children use home computers to complete their school
assignments. Many of the studies reviewed for the Children's Partnership report showed there is
evidence that information and communications technology can have a significant impact on
improving academic performance for students with lower grades or from low-income or rural
backgrounds”
All in all, the researcher’s topic is all about the impacts of technology to the Academics of
Senior High School Students of Lyceum of the Philippines University – Laguna. The related
literature that the researchers have gathered will be helpful in completing the said research. This
chapter includes the ideas, finished thesis, generalization or conclusion that is related about the
researcher’s topic. Those that were included in this chapter helps in familiarizing information that is
relevant and similar to the present study. In the section of this study, the effectivess of technology to
the academics of SHS SHS Stem Students, discusses various studies, published and unpublished
which are related to the present investigation.

The questions that the researchers wanted to answer is the positive and negative effect of
technology to the academics of SHS Stem Students in the mentioned school, and with the help of the
gathered related studies, the researchers came up with these answers, namely, that technology really
helps the students in their studies, it is said to be useful in terms of increasing and maintaining the
functional capabilities of students. It is also said that Technology is a tool that should enhance
student learning and achievement. Technology is making us more intelligent due our means of

obtaining, interpreting, and processing information. Many studies have discussed how technology
affects our brains and impact how much its use affects the way that we think and perform.
According to some of the gathered date of the researchers, the impact of technology on society is
indisputable. It has become increasingly clearer that newer more advanced methods of displaying
information through electronic devices is prevalent in today’s world. An appropriate experience with
technology allows them to control the medium and the outcome of the experience, to explore the
functionality of these tools, and on how they might be used in real life. Having said that, based on
the other gathered data, technology also have its negative effects on the academics of students, it
helps them on their academics in a lot of ways but on the other hand it makes them lazy inside the
house and they cannot help their parents do the household chores because of being focused to the
technology especially the internet, computers and mobiles.

METHODOLOGY

The primary purpose of the study was to examine the impact of technology to the SHS
STEM students in terms of their academics. This chapter deals with the different methods that the
researchers used with the different techniques in gathering information to make this chapter
successful. The researcher used descriptive method.

This study used a descriptive survey method used to assess the different impact of
technology to the academics of the SHS STEM students. The researchers will gather the data to the
SHS STEM students of the Lyceum of the Philippines University – Laguna. Researchers involves
the recording description analysis and the presentation of the present system, composition, or
process of phenomena.
The researchers study was conducted in the Lyceum of the Philippines University- Laguna.
The researchers chose to conduct the study there because the resources are contented and
accessible. The participants of the study are the Grade 11 and Grade 12 who are taking the strand of
STEM in LPU-L because researcher’s topic is related in technology that’s there are the best
respondent.
The researchers use the survey questionnaire to gathered information from the respondents.
The questionnaire composed of different question and ideas that the respondents can relate. The
answer of respondents can be the possible solution in those problem. It mainly shows the
information needed in the study and the things that the respondents must answer.
The researchers study uses a one-way process of collecting data from the respondents. The
researchers prepared a self- made questionnaire that was critique before it was distributed to the
respondents. It was then answered by the respondents and those answers were tallied by the
researchers in order to get the range and computed result of the study. The researchers computed the
percentage of how many respondents have the same answer in a certain portion of the questionnaire.

The data will then be compared from one another and afterwards be analysed and concluded as the
result of the study.
The researchers converted the data into scientific approaches and subject them to statistical
investigation to analyse the data that have been collected and will help to explain how the data
looks like. The researchers used the SPSS process in the tabulating all the gathered data. The
process will determine the overall impact of technology to the academics of SHS STEM Students at
Lyceum of the Philippines University – Laguna.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This study explains the conclusion of the whole research study on how did the data that
have been gathered are evaluated. The next one is the recommendation which makes a compilation
of the study that can be transferred and translated. It will help the future researchers in terms of
references and further study.

The proposed and pursued study of the researchers is the “The Impact of technology to the
academics of the SHS students in LPU – L” as they were a student who are also fond of using
technology. The study was answerable if it’ s important or not just by reading the title but the
researchers wanted to prove how really important technology is especially to the academics of the
STEM students. The researcher’s objectives and questionnaire is inclined as they made it for them
to be easy to analyze and gather the needed data. Out of the 100 respondents, almost all of them
agreed that technology can really be a big factor in the academics of the students and that it can
really affect them in studying. The youth today is really into technology, using gadgets and
technology is now part of their routine in their everyday lives. This situation now causes an
unbalance in their time in some aspects because their main focus will be on using their gadgets. But
on the other hand, the good thing that this situation bring is that the students are being more
resourceful now on how they use technology as the alternative way in studying and for their
academics. Cellphone is the most common gadget that people often use nowadays, it can be used
for communication, and it is also used to save pictures and information. The positive effect is that
the technology is very accessible and almost all of the information will be seen in just one click. But
on the other hand, the negative effect of technology is that it will depend on the user if the user will
always access a bad site or browse inappropriate stuffs and this can cause a bad effect that makes
one’s personality bad because they adopted a bad influence from the site that they found. The
impact of technology to the academics of the students is that it lessen the effort to search for
information. A innovative way of studying is that you can rely in specific sites that is registered and
Page
Lyceum of the Philippines
17
University - Laguna
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

accredited to the owner and that this are the trusted sites that we can get and use for our studies and
overall we are lucky because technology gives us different types of help to each other and even to
speak up what you want to share and it will be seen and post. You can get information as well as
you make a feedback. Technology makes your work into faster, innovated and easy way.

In this part the conclusion that is formulated by the researchers are stated. The study is
beneficial to:

To the respondents, the respondents will gain more information which can help them how
to handle that kind of situation if ever they experience it. Technology users will now be aware what
will happen if they use it too much and they will be aware about the consequences if they spend too
much time on using technology and on surfing the net. Also, they can make themselves discipline as
earlier as possible and stop themselves from being too attached to it.

To the students, they will know what are the effects and their possible action regarding
with the study. Students should put the things they learned in school into practice, develop their
standards and build their media and information literacy related competencies.

To the future researchers, this research can serve to them as a guide in making a new
one. It can be a basis for future studies. They can also improve it so it can be in line with the time
when the study is being done. Also, the researchers can look at it so they will know how to get
information from the reliable sources.

To the institution, it will serve as a guide for improving their way of teaching the
students. They will know what actions should be done to avoid mistakes like focusing too much of
their teaching time on using technology, so that they could focus on enlightening the students’
behavior and to teach them not too depend too much on technology.
