THE INDOLENCE OF THE FILIPINO

BY: JOSE RIZAL

MY REFLECTION

In the essay of Rizal, the word indolence wasn't just meant for us, but also to the Spaniard. It is ended
undeniable that indolence really does exist in our society that we are living today, like person who
disobeying traffic rules, not falling in line when they are commanded to do, leaving the trash behind
when you can throw them properly yourself because of the distance of the trash can from,
procrastinating and the countless, "mamaya nalang" or "bukas nalang" syndrome and there's a lot of
"tambay" people in our country. But Jose Rizal is right, what is the root causes of this all, what are the
reasons behind for this developed type of mentality among us Filipinos?

In this essay of Rizal, he stated that long before the Spaniard came, Filipino were compassionate,
Industrious and active in agriculture, industries and commerce but the coming of the Spaniards to the
country brought about the decline in economic activities and this is the very reason why Filipinos had
abandoned their pre-Hispanic industries. Filipinos used to be hardworking when they are working for
themselves, working for their lives and not working for the Spaniard by paying taxes that were extremely
high. Filipinos was forced to labor in a work that wasn't in their fields of work and this was required for
many Filipino male and farms were left uncultivated. Now tell me, whom would not not be sick of
working when you are forced to work into something you didn't like, into something you didn't used to
and to something that is not for you but to someone you really hate, the Spaniard who was controlling
you and grasping on your neck and forced you to work. Filipinos were being denied of economic rights
and thus resulted for any Filipinos to give up on their work, lands and even their life. Spaniard is the one
who made the Filipinos indolence, instead of helping them to progress and improve their capability of
working, they restrained them. They insisted, teach them to settle for less and just pray because that's
more easier way to go to heaven. They prevented them to explore in their own capacity of working in
their fields and gave them reason to become weary in working.

Filipinos are really used to be hardworking and there's a lot of proofs from that, and Banaue Rice
Terraces is just one of the best example of that. Banaue Rice Terraces was a clear manifestation of the
hardworking and industrious Filipino people, but the Spaniards who first set foot on the Land had
noticed that people have enough supply of food and that they are generous and industrious, so that they
took advantage of it. They benefited every fruit of hardwork every Filipinos exerted, but when the
Filipinos needed their help when they've been subdued by foreign invaders and pirate who killed, burred
their houses and destroy their land, Spaniards are no where to be found to help and protect them. That
is why, why would Filipino people exert effort to work hard when they know that Spaniard who only
think for themselves will benefit from it.

Filipinos were indolence in a way of giving a little love for work they exert and lack of energy, but the
Spaniards are indolence in a way of being parasite. They make or force rather, the Filipino people for
their own benefit, for their own gain, for their own good, and leaving that poor people empty with
wounds. Spaniards are like parasites, they sip everything they can benefit from us, and leaving us empty.

This chronic malady of indolence of the Filipino people, is because of the Spaniards themselves are
indolence, instilling every Filipinos the model of indolence by forcing them to work hard for their
benefits, while them working for what they just pleases. When they are reported to work at noon but
they left early, all the while doing nothing inline with their duties. People can't blame the Filipino for
being indolent, because they are forced to work that is against their will. They refuses the Filipinos to
have free will and step on to their liberty. They make us foolish and treat us like a puppet who forced to
do as what they are commanded to do. Now tell me, when our freedom is being denied to us in our own
territory, who can blam us for being idle?
