Him, J. Bno, Zool. Vol, 4, 1990, pp, 173176 A REPORT ON EFFICIENCY OF PRIMARY TREATMENT PLANT, CHANDIGARH M. K, Chona Deparunent of Zoology, Panjab University, Chandigarh-160 014, India. The study on temperature, pH, DO, BOD, TS, TSS, TDS, free CO,, total alkalinity, total hardness, chlorides and biological characteristics of treated and untreated sewage samples indicated that Primary Treatment Plant, Chandigarh had an efficiency of 25%. For the present work, treated and untreated sewage samples were collected from Primary Troatment Plant, Chandigarh. The biological and physico-chemical analysis of the sewage samples were done according to Welch! and APHA® respec- tively for 9 period of ono yoar (Fob., 89—Jan., 90). For identification af binta, Kurlo and Ward and Whipple‘ were consulted. Physico-chemical results (Table 1) indicated that parameters like temperature, pH, DO, free CO,, total hardness, total alkalinity and chlorides did not show much variation in both samples. However, values of BOD, TS, TSS and TDS showed decrease. This reduction of BOD (35%) was mainly caused by the removal of about 40% of total eolids by primary treatment, Biological results (Table 2) showed the presence of Arthospira sp. Hymenomonas sp Sphacatlus sp, Leptliix sp. Crzlliris ap. Trclomonas sp, Dactslacores SP Oseatra cp, Calpidinm spa. Golpoda spy Parameciam sp. and Stylonchia sp. in both samples. However, in untreated sewage, Microcklris sp. and Chlorococum ep. and in treated, Mficrcsis sp. and Clilephyra sp. were present. These sewage organisms have also been reported earlier.
