Abraham Lincoln

UNITED STATES PRESIDENT


BASIC INFORMATION

 He was born on February 12th,


1809 in Hodgenville, Kentucky,
U.S.
 His parents were: Thomas Lincoln
and Nancy Hanks.

 His Siblings were Sarah (eldest)


and Thomas (youngest).
ADOLESCENCE

 He served as a captain in the U.S.


Army during the Black Hawk War.

 Lincoln was a Whig Party member


of the U.S. at the beginning of his
political career.

 He married with Mary Todd


Lincoln in 1842.
LINCOLN AS A POLITICIAN

Worked as a lawyer in Illinois (1830).


In 1854, when the Whig party disintegrated,
Lincoln was one of the founding members of
the Republican party.
Lincoln was chosen as a candidate for vice
president, but defeated in the voting in 1856.
(Philadelphia).
LINCOLN CHOSEN PRESIDENT

 In the presidential elections of


November 6th, 1860, Lincoln
was faced with Stephen Douglas,
John Breckinridge, and even
third candidate named John
Bell.

 Lincoln was the winner and he


was elected president.
GOVERNMENT OF LINCOLN

 The goals of his presidency was an "American


System":
 Customs policy.
 Public infrastructure investment.
 Inflationary banking policy.
EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION

 During his presidency, Lincoln is


credited with freeing the slaves through
the Emancipation Proclamation,
however, the proclamation make ​the
abolition of slavery in the rebel states
were an official war goal.
 Immediately freed 50 thousand slaves.
CIVIL WAR

 Occurred in 1861-1865, the


origin were disputes over the
issue of slavery, as the southern
states did not want to give up
this ancient privilege.
 Union: 20 free states.
 Confederate: 11 slaves states.

Davis.

 At least 618,000 died.

 Started: April 12th, 1861.


 Ended: May 9th, 1865.

 Abolished slavery in the United States.


LINCOLN’S REELECTION

 On November 8th, 1864, for the


second time Lincoln won the
presidential election, defeating Mc
Clellan.
 On March 4th, 1865 entered its
second consecutive presidential
term.
ASSASSINATION

 Lincoln and his wife, Mary Todd, went to attend a


performance at Ford's Theater.
 When Lincoln sat in the balcony, John Wilkes
Booth, appeared from behind a single shot with a
pistol to the head of the president.
ASSASSINATION

 Lincoln's body was carried by train in a grand


funeral procession through several states.
 Abraham Lincoln died on April 14th, 1865 in
Washington D.C.
 Today his remains rest in Oak Ridge Cemetery in
Springfield (Illinois).
