Searching information
Knowing how to search and evaluate information is very important and a lot of
higher-order thinking world language assignments require this skill. For example,
students could be required to solve a real-world problem exits in the target language
country. In order to help my students and me to better navigate the Internet, I would
work through with some of the lessons by myself and with my students from Google
Search Literacy Lesson Plans and/or A Google A Day Challenges. These resources
could be good guidelines and practices for us to search for information more effectively
by being better at picking the right search terms, understanding search results,
narrowing the search, searching for evidence for research tasks and evaluating the
credibility of sources.

Last but not least, as an educator, protecting students while they are using all sorts of
digital tools in learning is one of my biggest responsibilities. I completely agree with
Danah Boyd’s opinion regarding how to help students thrive in the technology-soaked
world. “ The key to helping youth navigate contemporary digital life isn’t more
restrictions. It’s freedom–plus communication.” As in the possible activities/digital guide
lessons that I mentioned before, student-teacher collaboration and discussion about
learning how to search information, as well as how to become respectful digital citizens
would make students feel that they are treated equitably with adults. My role will be the
facilitator to guide and support students to safely use the technology in order to
maximize their learning rather than controlling them.
