The medici effect

Frans Johansson

“this place, where the different fields meet, is what I call the Intersection.
And the explosion of remarkable innovations that you find there is what I
call the Medici Effect”. This book is about how to create it. The motive
behind this book is simple: When you investigate fields, disciplines, or
cultures, you can combine existing ideas into many extraordinary new
ideas. The Intersection is not only a place to uncover new combinations or
ideas, it is the best place to create extraordinary ones.

In the first chapter the author expresses that when we are working in a field,
we combine ideas of field generating ideas evolving direction such ideas are
called directional ideas. When we enter into intersection and combine
different ideas or cultures etc. those ideas were called intersectional ideas,
which can be fascinating, take new directions also can open up new field,
author mention importance breaking barriers so that we can combine ideas
of different fields so that we can get creative ideas author explains some
ways to break the barriers
1. exposed themselves to a range of cultures
2. took on multiple perspectives
3. Reversing their assumptions
4. Learning differently

Authors feels that we can increase the creativity by exposing to different

cultures, because due to exposure one can think of in different approach
than others, once one person has exposure to different cultures, he can
think in intersection way led to better ideas or solutions.

After reading this book, I came to know the importance of intersection of

ideas or different cultures in creativity
