DAY 1: How Invincible Are You?

Goals: Students will explore their personal experiences and current understandings to
determine their own invincibility. They will have the opportunity to explore other
perspectives to better strengthen their own thoughts. Their responses may or may not
allude to their cellular level. The How Invincible Are You unit will then be introduced,
which challenges students to consider their cells. Students will begin brainstorming in
what ways their cells did or did not play a role in the examples that were discussed in
class. Questions will be generated of what they might want/need to know about cells
to better understand their invincibility.

Individual Journaling & Peer Share

Using the visual on the next page, students will be asked to respond to the guiding question while
providing examples and sharing their thoughts with a peer to better verbalize their ideas.

Take A Stand: How Invincible Are Y ou?

-“As teenagers, we think we’re invincible, I’m here to tell you- we are not.”
-If the statement is shifted to “as people” does your position shift?
-What about “as adults?”

Emerging Questions Brainstorm

As a learning community we will ponder what role our cells do or do not have in the examples
of invincibility/vulnerability shared throughout the day. What would we need/want to know about our
cells to better understand their role in our invincibility/vulnerability?
