Consumer Experience as-a-Service

SUMMER INTERNSHIP AT W IPRO LIMITED, BANGALORE (APRIL,2019-JUNE,2019)

I am a 2018-20 Batch Postgraduate Diploma in Management (Marketing & Analytics)

student at Great Lakes Institute of Management, Gurgaon. I did my Summer Internship
for two months at Wipro Limited.
When I received, my internship offer letter from Wipro, I was excited to work there as it is
one of India’s top 5 IT services and consulting company with strong international market
presence. Getting an opportunity to work at the headquarters in Bangalore was like an
icing on the cake. To add to my excitement, I was assigned to the Cloud and Infrastructure
Services (CIS) which was a dream come true as a techie. Being a Fresher and an avid
connoisseur of trends in technology, I was quite nervous about my first corporate
experience. So as to prepare myself for this golden opportunity, I started to do my
research about the company and the underlying responsibilities there, so as to get a better
role clarity, and therefore quickly adjust in the scheme of things.
It was April 1st, 2019, my first day in the corporate world. On day one, following the
registration and session on company structure & culture, our roles & responsibilities, and
the timeline for our internships we were introduced to the existing employees. On the
second day, ice breaking and team building exercises with the other interns were
conducted, so as to develop team synergy, which I am very fond of and comfortable with,
on a personal level. Post all these training sessions, I met my mentor, David D’Lima (Vice
President CIS and Consulting Head). Then, for the next two months, he was not only a
mentor figure but a huge inspiration who has changed my life for the better. His life
lessons, clubbed with the technological expertise, were a game changer for me which I
shall cherish until I enter my grave. His influence was so powerful that upon returning to
the business school life, I stood unique in a class of 100 students in terms of thought
process and clarity of practicality of concepts. I attribute this thinking process to the clinical
guidance of David and the two months of churning myself at Wipro. I often recollect his
small introductory session in which he briefed me on the project (Consumer Experience-
as-a-Service), and deliverables. It was fascinating to me how such complex business
scenarios were decoded in layman’s language for me. With time, I realized that it requires
high business acumen and great understanding of customer needs so as to simplify
things so easily. This is how my learning curve shaped during the internship. This was a
once in a lifetime opportunity for me to work as a student in the industry.
About my project “Consumer Experience-as-a-Service”
Invisible Infrastructure is a new buzzword which has implication for legendary names such
as HP, Intel, Dell and many others. Meanwhile New age companies like Google and AWS
(known for invisible infrastructure in the cloud) are building highly visible infrastructure
such as Google home and Amazon Echo, while niche companies make increasingly
sophisticated home security, home entertainment, communication HVAC/lighting control
systems. Now-a-days, new age Asset-light companies like Netflix, Uber, Airbnb, etc.
which provide flexibility in making choices for the customer and are becoming threats to
the traditional Asset-Heavy companies. They can experiment new things at a much lower
value in terms of time, cost and quality.

My project was divided into three phases:

First phase of the project was to identify consumer technologies (such as, Internet of
Things, Virtual and Augmented Reality etc.) that can be applied to enterprises, and how
Wipro can find and tap in to new opportunities in it. While working on it, I also got exposed
to corporate life and dynamic work culture. I went through several research papers and
market analysts reports to understand the business in a thorough manner. Also,
interaction with experienced industry professionals proved to be a boon in my humble
journey.
The second phase of the project was to find the use cases for the technologies and how
Wipro can leverage these technologies and offer business to its clients. While trying to
figure out all this, I interacted with various Project Managers of Wipro, and discussed
about their ongoing projects and how we can implement these technologies in real-time
scenarios.
Never knew how time fled. One month had passed by and it was time for Mid-Review
session in which I presented my progress and my road map ahead. I received a positive
feedback, which filled me with more ardour.
In the last phase, as a marketing intern, my job was to configure and recommend changes
in the workforce, partnership with OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and re-
focus market segment. The most interesting aspect of Wipro Internship was the exposure
to the B2B market, something which was entirely new for me, as I had studied marketing
strategies only for the B2C markets. As Wipro deals, majorly with B2B clients, working on
them was quite insightful for me.
The Journey Concluded with a presentation to the Senior Executive (Chief Technology
Officer) and submission of report. I will define my Two Months' time at Wipro as a Life-
Changing, inspiring and path-breaking experience as it helped me in gaining domain and
business knowledge along with humble hands-on experience.
