 COURSE ASSISTANT: TBA, the assistant will be in charge of conducting computer
laboratory sessions. He will be in touch with you using the registration mail system
about the locations and times of these extra sessions. Computer Labs will give you
the opportunity to apply the concepts with Microsoft Excel.

Course Overview and Objectives:

This course is designed to teach the basic statistical concepts and tools needed for
business applications. The topics covered are: (i) Data and Statistics; (ii) Probability; (iii)
Sampling Theory. This course will help develop the basic quantitative tools that will be
needed in the functional areas of management like Operations, Marketing and Finance.
The main objective is to develop a notion of statistical summary measures that could be
used to understand data collected in different contexts and to understand basic
probability distributions which will later be needed in either must or elective courses in
functional areas of management. Students will not only be presented with a theoretical
framework, but will also have the chance to carry out actual analysis using computer
software in the computer lab sessions.

Learning Outcomes:
After completing the course the students should be able to:
1. Generate charts and plots as needed in preparing a business report or be able to
interpret these charts in reading a business report.
2. Use the functions of Microsoft Excel (Relevant statistical formulas, Chart Wizard,
Pivot Table, and Data Analysis Toolpak).
3. Calculate and interpret summary statistics (mean, median, mode, standard
deviation, etc.).
4. Understand the concept of a probability distribution, including the notions of
expected value and variance.
5. Understand and be able to calculate probabilities as needed from commonly used
discreet and continuous probability distributions.
6. Utilize an appropriate sampling method and understand how sample statistics
behave.

Week 1: (Starting September 23 Monday)

Introduction and overview of the book and course.
Week 2:
Chapter 1: Defining and Collecting Data
Basic terminology and some common applications of Statistics in management and other
fields. Variable types, data sources. Types of sampling methods (probabilistic methods,
non-probabilistic methods).
Week 3:
Chapter 2: Organizing and Visualizing Data
Pie chart, bar chart, frequency table, ordered array, histogram, frequency polygon, stem
plot (stem and leaf plot), contingency table, side-by-side bar chart. Generating
histograms with unequal interval widths will be discussed as extra material.

Week 4:
MIDTERM EXAM 1 ON OCTOBER 14 & 16, EACH SECTION WILL TAKE THE MIDTERM IN
ITS DESIGNATED CLASS TIME AND PLACE. MIDTERM 1 COVERS CHAPTERS 1 AND 2.

Week 5 & 6:
Chapter 3: Numerical Descriptive Measures
Mean, geometric mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation, variance, skewness,
kurtosis, interquartile range, quartiles, percentiles, z-score computation, empirical rules,
estimating summary measures from a frequency table.
Week 7:
Chapter 4: Basic Probability
Sample spaces, axioms of probability, conditional probability, Bayes’ theorem, counting
rules (permutations, combinations, factorial).

Week 8:
MIDTERM EXAM 2 ON NOVEMBER 11 & 13, EACH SECTION WILL TAKE THE MIDTERM IN
ITS DESIGNATED CLASS TIME AND PLACE. MIDTERM 1 COVERS CHAPTERS 3 AND 4.

Weeks 9 & 10:

Chapter 5: Some Important Discrete probability Distributions
The notion of Expected Value and Variance of a discreet probability distribution. The
Binomial, Poisson and Hypergeometric distributions. Also the Negative Binomial and
Geometric distributions will be discussed as extra material.
Week 11 & 12:
Chapter 6: The Normal Distribution and Other Continuous Distributions
The notion of density function and cumulative density function as it applies to continuous
distributions. Three well know continuous density functions: Normal, Uniform, and
Exponential. Computing probabilities from a Z-Table for the Normal distribution. The
lognormal distribution will be discussed as extra material.
Week 13: (Starting December 16 Monday– Last Day of Classes December 18)
Chapter 7: Sampling and sampling Distributions
Types of sampling methods (probabilistic methods, non-probabilistic methods), sampling
distribution of the mean and the proportion.

Final exam: Covers Chapters 5-7, Will be given according to the dates
announced by the registrar. (Between December 21-January 4).
GRADING and other ISSUES:

There will be two midterm exams (Midterm1 15% and Midterm 2 15 %), a final exam (30
%) and case analysis – details will be announced (25 %). Attendance will be taken (after
the ADD DROP period) and will have a weight of 15% (NO EXCUSE notes for attendance
points). Please bring a scientific calculator to all exams. There will be problem sessions or
computer laboratory sessions conducted by the course assistant. The dates and times of
these sessions are to be determined as the class proceeds. Any announcements will be
made through the class web site or by e-mail (the registration system will be used to
send e-mails but the web site should be checked regularly for announcements).

Your weighted final score will be computed as:

0.15 * Midterm1 + 0.15 * Midterm2 + 0.300 * Final + Attendance * 0.15 + Case * 0.25.
After that, the letter grades will be assigned according to the following guideline: 90-100
AA, 85-90 BA, 80-85 BB, 75-80 CB, 70-75 CC, 60-70 DC, 50-60 DD, 0-50 F.
