MATH LESSON NOTES – NOVEMBER 2019
CHAPTER 5 - MULTIPLICATION
THEME:ANIMALS
Multiplication is repeated addition

+ + =

2 + 2 + 2 = 6

There are 3 groups of 2 butterflies each.

The total number of butterflies is 2 + 2 +
3 and 2 are called factors and
2=6
6 is called product. ‘x’ is the
We can say that 2 taken 3 times is 6, or
symbol for multiplication.
three 2s are 6
That is, 2 x 3 = 6

Multiplication is a quick way to add the number over and over again.

Examples:

+ + +

i. Number of groups = 4
ii. Number of bees in each group = 2
iii. Number of bees in all = 8
iv. Addition fact = 2+2+2+2
v. Multiplication fact = 2x4

3
(CW - Do page no.130)

Multiplication using number line

We say that four times three is 12

or
3 multiplied by 4 is equal to 12
or
3 x 4 = 12

Mental Math - 1
1. Write the multiplication fact of 7+7+7 = __________
2. Write the addition fact of 3 x 4= ____________
3. 5 times 7 is _______
4. One triangle has 3 sides. How many sides do 8 triangles have?
______
5. 5 sticks in a bundle. _________sticks in 8 bundles.
6. Multiplication is repeated ________________.

Properties of Multiplication
1. When we multiply a number by 0 the product is always ‘0’.
Eg: 6 x 0 = 0
15 x 0 = 0

2. When we multiply a number by 1, the product is the number itself.

Eg: 8 x 1 = 8
20 x 1 = 20
3. Two numbers can be multiplied in any order, their product will
always be the same.
Eg: 2 x 6 = 12
6 x 2 = 12
So, 2 x 6 = 6 x 2
(CW - page no.141, HW - page no. 142)

Fill in the blanks

1. 6x1=6
2. Any number multiplied by one is the number itself.
3. 7x6=6x7
4. 100 x 0 = 0
5. 9x1=9

4
Multiplication of a two digit number by 1 – digit number
without carrying

Regroup 15 ones as : 15 ones = 1 ten and 5 ones.
Write 5 in the ones column. Carry over 1 to the tens column.
Step 3: Multiply 1 ten by 3 : 3 x 1 ten = 3 tens.
