Wave Propagation and Antennas (Lab) EE-416L

Lab #10 (Fall-2019, 2016 Session) 12-Nov-2019

Task: Design a patch antenna with the given specifications. Use quarter wave impedance transformer
for impedance matching.

Guideline: Use following calculators.

Calculator 1: For Microstrip patch dimensions:

Calculator 2: Microstrip impedance calculator

Calculator 3: Quarter-Wave Transformer

Follow these steps:

i) Find the dimensions of Patch from calculator 1.

ii) Use the impedance of Patch from calculator 1 in calculator 2. Calculate the width of
microstrip. Use electrical length as 90 degrees.
iii) Calculate the impedance of transformer using calculator 3.
iv) Use the impedance from above step in calculator 2 and find the width of this microstrip (i.e.
width of transformer).
v) Calculate the length of transformer as lambda ef/4.
vi) Draw the geometry in HFSS.

Parameters: er=4.4, h=1.6mm, f=2.4GHz.

Results/Tasks:

A) Plot/Find the following:

i) 3D polar Plot
ii) Return loss
iii) Principle plane gain cuts (normalized radiation pattern plots).
iv) Find the value of gain.
v) Find the angle at which maximum gain occurs.

B) Find the efect of variation of width of Patch on impedance matching and impedance bandwidth.
(3-4 variations).
C) Find the efect of thickness of substrate on impedance matching and impedance bandwidth. (3-
4 variations).
