Abstract

“THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT AND STUDENTS ACADEMIC

ACHIEVEMENT”
RAZEL C. SORIANO, MSciEd

This study investigates whether or not there is a relationship between parental

involvement and students’ academic achievement. Also investigates: parents’ self-efficacy

towards assisting their children based on their own intellectual abilities and the parents’

involvement towards their children academic tasks. This study both qualitative and quantitative

methods of research which employed specifically the correlational design. Thus, this study is

designed to examine the extent of parent involvement in their child’s homework and explore

relationships as it relates to student outcome/achievement within a traditional high school setting.

It was conducted at Francisco LL. Laya Memorial Integrated School, Pindugangan, Tipanoy, Iligan

City. The respondents of this study were the Grade Seven (7) Junior High School students and

the parents of the student-respondents during the first to second quarter of school year 2018 –

2019.

The results showed that in terms of students’ level of academic achievement, the non-

tested group ( x = 79, SD = 3.60) is considered at fairly satisfactory level while the tested group

( x = 83.90, SD = 3.91) is at Satisfactory level. The analysis of the data showed a correlation in

several categories for both groups. In terms of parents’ self-efficacy towards assisting their

children, the parents of the testes group are Quit confident ( x = 4.3 ) in assisting the children

both in school and at home while the non-tested group’s parents are ( x = 2.4) slightly confident.

Also, the most of the parents in the tested group are involved in their children’s activity both

school and home ( x = 4.2) two to three days per week while the non-tested group visited the

school or get involved in their children’s academic task ( x = 2.2) few times a week

A correlation existed between student’s views of the assistance that they received from

their parents and their level academic achievements. I conclude that, parents who are more

involved in the academic lives of their children have students who have a higher probability of

being successful academically, as a result of that additional assistance.
