GENERAL SCIENCE
(FUNDAMENTAL NCERT TEST)

1. C
Statement 1 is incorrect: The biosphere reserves help to maintain the biodiversity and culture of that area. A
biosphere reserve may also contain other protected areas in it. The Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve consists of one
national park named Satpura and two wildlife sanctuaries named Bori and Pachmarhi.
Statement 2 is correct: Sal and wild mango as two examples of the endemic flora of the Pachmarhi Biosphere
Reserve.
Statement 3 is correct: Bison, Indian giant squirrel and flying squirrel are endemic fauna of this area.
Thus, Option C is correct.
2. A
Statement 1 is correct: Biogas is a type of biofuel that is naturally produced from the decomposition of organic
waste. When organic matter, such as food scraps and animal waste, break down in an anaerobic environment (an
environment absent of oxygen) they release a blend of gases, primarily methane and carbon dioxide. Because this
decomposition happens in an anaerobic environment, the process of producing biogas is also known as anaerobic
digestion.
Statement 2 is incorrect: Biogas is a mixture of different gases, major portion in biogas being methane (CH4) and
carbon dioxide (CO2). It also contains traces of other gases like hydrogen (H2), Moisture (H2O), hydrogen sulphide
(H2S) etc. Improved digesters used for anaerobic digestion can produce biogas with 65% - 75% methane content.
Thus, Option A is correct.
3. B
Statement 1 is correct: Usually crop plants absorb a lot of nitrogen and the soil becomes deficient in nitrogen. You
learnt that though nitrogen gas is available in plenty in the air, plants cannot use it in the manner they can use
carbon dioxide. They need nitrogen in a soluble form. The bacterium called Rhizobium can take atmospheric
nitrogen and convert it into a usable form.
Statement 2 is incorrect: But Rhizobium cannot make its own food. So, it often lives in the roots of gram, peas,
moong, beans and other legumes and provides them with nitrogen.
Statement 3 is correct: In return, the plants provide food and shelter to the bacteria. They, thus, have a symbiotic
relationship. This association is of great significance for the farmers. They can reduce the use of nitrogenous fertiliser
where leguminous plants are grown. Most of the pulses (dals) are obtained from leguminous plants.
Thus, Option B is correct.
4. D
The common methods of preserving food in our homes
Chemical Method - Salts and edible oils are the common chemicals generally used to check the growth of
microorganisms. Therefore, they are called preservatives. We add salt or acid preservatives to pickles to prevent the
attack of microbes. Sodium benzoate and sodium metabisulphite are common preservatives. These are also used in
jams and squashes to check their spoilage.
Preservation by Common Salt - Common salt has been used to preserve meat and fish for ages. Meat and fish are
covered with dry salt to check the growth of bacteria. Salting is also used to preserve amla, raw mangoes, tamarind,
etc.
Preservation by Sugar - Jams, jellies and squashes are preserved by sugar. Sugar reduces the moisture content which
inhibits the growth of bacteria which spoil food.
Preservation by Oil and Vinegar - Use of oil and vinegar prevents spoilage of pickles because bacteria cannot live in
such an environment. Vegetables, fruits, fish and meat are often preserved by this method.

Heat and Cold Treatments - Boiling kills many microorganisms. Similarly, we keep our food in the refrigerator. Low
temperature inhibits the growth of microbes.
Pasteurised milk can be consumed without boiling as it is free from harmful microbes. The milk is heated to about
700C for 15 to 30 seconds and then suddenly chilled and stored. By doing so, it prevents the growth of microbes.
This process was discovered by Louis Pasteur. It is called pasteurisation.
Thus, Option D is correct.
5. B
Statement 1 is incorrect: Rajasthan government has launched a new higher education model titled Resource
Assistance for Colleges with Excellence (RACE), in the presence of principals of colleges. Gujarat and Kerala
government haven’t launched any such model.
Statement 2 is correct: All the colleges would get equal opportunities for imparting quality education with the
adoption of the new model. It is a new higher education model for distribution of faculties and movable assets
among the government colleges at the district level to rationalise the availability of resources.
Thus, Option B is correct.
6. B
Statement 1 is correct: The plants that cannot synthesise their own food and depends on other plants are called as
parasite.
Statement 2 is correct: A plant that captures and digests insects either passively (as the common pitcher plant or the
sundew) or by the movement of certain organs.
Statement 3 is incorrect: This is a plant called Cuscuta (Amarbel). It does not have chlorophyll. It takes readymade
food from the plant on which it is climbing. The plant on which it climbs is called the host. A genus of climbing plants
that are parasitic on many crop plants, to which they can cause serious damage. They have no green tissue, but thin,
herbaceous stems and small flowers in clusters. There are about 145 species of tropical and temperate regions.
Thus, Option B is correct.
7. B
Viruses are also microscopic but are different from other microorganisms. They, however, reproduce only inside the
cells of the host organism, which may be a bacterium, plant or animal. Common ailments like cold, influenza (flu) and
most coughs are caused by viruses. Serious diseases like polio and chicken pox are also caused by viruses.
Diseases like dysentery and malaria are caused by protozoa (protozoans) whereas typhoid and tuberculosis (TB) are
bacterial diseases.
Thus, Option B is correct.
8. B
Microorganisms are classified into four major groups. These groups are bacteria, fungi, protozoa and some algae. A
virus is definitely too small to be seen without a microscope. Since viruses are so small (tinier than bacteria) they
may be considered microbes. However, since they are not "alive" outside of a host organism, it is debatable whether
they are really organisms at all
Thus, Option B is correct.

Thus, Option B is correct.
10. A
Statement 1 is correct: Silk fibres are also animal fibres. Silkworms spin the ‘silk fibres’. The rearing of silkworms for
obtaining silk is called sericulture.
Statement 2 is incorrect: In India, women are significantly involved in various kinds of industries related to silk
production. These are rearing of silkworms, reeling of silk from cocoons and processing of raw silk into fabrics. By
their enterprise, they contribute to the nation’s economy. China leads the world in silk production. India also ranks
among the leading silk producing countries.
Thus, Option A is correct.
11. C
Statement 1 is correct: Leaves prepare their food in the presence of sunlight and a green coloured substance
present in them. For this, they also use water and carbon dioxide. This process is called photosynthesis.
Statement 2 is incorrect: Oxygen is given out in this process. The food prepared by leaves ultimately gets stored in
different parts of plant.
Statement 3 is correct: Water comes out of leaves in the form of vapour by a process called transpiration. Plants
release a lot of water into the air through this process.
Thus, Option C is correct.
12. C
Statement 1 is correct: One of the most important tasks in agriculture is to turn the soil and loosen it. This allows the
roots to penetrate deep into the soil. The loose soil allows the roots to breathe easily even when they go deep into
the soil. Dead plants and animals get decomposed by soil organisms. In this way, various nutrients in the dead
organisms are released back into the soil. These nutrients are again absorbed by plants. Since only a few centimetres
of the top layer of soil supports plant growth, turning and loosening of soil brings the nutrient-rich soil to the top so
that plants can use these nutrients turning and loosening of soil is very important for cultivation of crops. The
process of loosening and turning of the soil is called tilling or ploughing. This is done by using a plough.
Statement 2 is correct: The loosened soil helps in the growth of earthworms and microbes present in the soil. These
organisms are friends of the farmer since they further turn and loosen the soil and add humus to it.
Thus, Option C is correct.
13. A
A chimera is essentially a single organism that's made up of cells from two or more "individuals"—that is, it contains
two sets of DNA, with the code to make two separate organisms. One way that chimeras can happen naturally in
humans is that a fetus can absorb its twin. Recently Japanese government has allowed to conduct human-animal
embryo experiments, with the ultimate goal of someday creating organs to be transplanted into humans.
Thus, Option A is correct.

14. C
Statement 1 is correct: Replenishing the soil with nutrients is through crop rotation. This can be done by growing
different crops alternately. Earlier, farmers in northern India used to grow legumes as fodder in one season and
wheat in the next season. This helped in the replenishment of the soil with nitrogen. Farmers are being encouraged
to adopt this practice.
Statement 2 is incorrect: Inter -cropping is growing two or more crops simultaneously on the same field in a definite
pattern. A few rows of one crop alternate with a few rows of a second crop, for example, soyabean + maize, or finger
millet (bajra) + cowpea (lobia). The crops are selected such that their nutrient requirements are different. This
ensures maximum utilisation of the nutrients supplied, and also prevents pests and diseases from spreading to all
the plants belonging to one crop in a field. This way, both crops can give better returns.
Statement 3 is correct: Mixed cropping is growing two or more crops simultaneously on the same piece of land, for
example, wheat + gram, or wheat + mustard, or groundnut + sunflower. This reduces risk and gives some insurance
against failure of one of the crops.
Thus, Option C is correct.
15. A
Statement 1 is correct: A change in which one or more new substances are formed is called a chemical change. A
chemical change is also called a chemical reaction.
Statement 2 is incorrect: Chemical changes are very important in our lives. All new substances are formed as a result
of chemical changes. For example, digestion of food in our body, ripening of fruits, fermentation of grapes, etc.,
happen due to series of chemical changes. A medicine is the end product of a chain of chemical reactions. Useful
new materials, such as plastics and detergents, are produced by chemical reactions. Indeed, every new material is
discovered by studying chemical changes. Burning of magnesium ribbon is a chemical change. Burning of coal, wood
or leaves is also a chemical change. In fact, burning of any substance is a chemical change. Burning is always
accompanied by production of heat. Salt can be obtained by the evaporation of sea water. The salt obtained in this
manner is not pure and the shape of its crystals cannot be seen clearly. However, large crystals of pure substances
can be formed from their solutions. The process is called crystallisation. It is an example of a physical change.
Thus, Option A is correct.
16. D
Statement 1 is correct: It enhances the water holding capacity of the soil.
Statement 2 is correct: It makes the soil porous due to which exchange of gases becomes easy.
Statement 3 is correct: It increases the number of friendly microbes. It improves the texture of the soil.
Thus, Option D is correct.
17. D
Statement 1 is incorrect: It proposes to amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956 to increase the
number of Judges in the Supreme Court from present thirty to thirty-three, excluding the Chief Justice of India.
Statement 2 is incorrect: For increasing the strengths of Supreme Court judges, amendment requires simple
majority that is 50% of members present and voting.
Thus, Option D is correct.
18. D
Since earthquakes are caused by the movement of plates, the boundaries of the plates are the weak zones where
earthquakes are more likely to occur. The weak zones are also known as seismic or fault zones. In India, the areas
most threatened are Kashmir, Western and Central Himalayas, the whole of North-East, Rann of Kutch, Rajasthan
and the Indo–Gangetic Plane.
Thus, Option D is correct.
19. A

the transport of water and nutrients in the plant is called the xylem.
Statement 2 is incorrect:The food has to be transported to all parts of the plant and not only stem.. This is done by
the vascular tissue called the phloem. Phloem transports products of photosynthesis from the leaves where they are
synthesised to other parts of the plant
Thus, Option A is correct.
20. D
Water drawn from under the ground gets restored by seepage of rainwater. The water table does not get affected as
long as we draw as much water as is replenished by natural processes. However, water table may go down if the
water is not sufficiently replenished. This may happen due to many reasons. Increase in population, industrial and
agricultural activities are some common factors affecting water table. Scanty rainfall is another factor that may
deplete the water table. Yet another factor affecting water table could be deforestation and decrease in the
effective area for seepage of water.
Increasing population
Increasing population creates demand for construction of houses, shops, offices, roads and pavements. This
decreases the open areas like parks, and playgrounds. This, in turn, decreases the seepage of rainwater into the
ground. What could be the consequence? Recall that a pukka floor does not allow water to seep in easily, while in a
grass lawn water seeps through in no time.
Moreover, a huge amount of water is required for construction work. Often groundwater is used for this purpose.
So, on the one hand we are consuming more groundwater, and on the other we are allowing lesser water to seep
into the ground. This results in depletion of water table. In fact, the water table in some parts of many cities has
gone down to alarmingly low levels.
Increasing industries
Water is used by all the industries. Almost everything that we use needs water somewhere in its production process.
The number of industries is increasing continuously. Water used by most of the industries is drawn from the ground.
Thus, Option D is correct.
21. D
Vitamins are of different kinds known by different
names. Some of these are Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin
D, Vitamin E and K. There is also a group of vitamins
called Vitamin B-complex. Our body needs all types of
vitamins in small quantities. Vitamin A keeps our skin and
eyes healthy. Vitamin C helps body to fight against many
diseases. Vitamin D helps our body to use calcium for
bones and teeth.

Thus, Option D is correct.

Statement 1 is correct: Plants with weak stems that cannot stand upright but spread on the ground are
calledcreepers, while those that take support and climb up are called climbers.
Statement 2 is incorrect: Creepers: Plants with weak stem that cannot stand upright and spread on the ground are
called creepers.
Examples: Pumpkin, Watermelon, sweet potato, etc.
Climber: Plants with weak stem that needs support is calledclimber.
Examples: Grapevine, money-plant, cucumber, bean, etc.
Thus, Option A is correct.
24. C
Statement 1 is correct: Since the amount of dissolved oxygen is fairly low compared to the amount of oxygen in the
air, the rate of breathing in aquatic organisms is much faster than that seen in terrestrial organisms.
Statement 2 is correct: Unlike land animals, which have lungs to take in oxygen from the air, fish have gills to
breathe in the oxygen contained in water. This process of breathing begins when a fish gulps water through its
mouth. At the same time, waste carbon dioxide in the blood passes out through the gills into the water.
Thus, Option C is correct.
25. B
Statement 1 is correct: Tidal Energy - Due to the gravitational pull of mainly the moon on the spinning earth, the
level of water in the sea rises and falls. If you live near the sea or ever travel to some place near the sea, try and
observe how the sea-level changes during the day. This phenomenon is called high and low tides and the difference
in sea-levels gives us tidal energy. Tidal energy is harnessed by constructing a dam across a narrow opening to the
sea. A turbine fixed at the opening of the dam converts tidal energy to electricity. As you can guess, the locations
where such dams can be built are limited.
Statement 2 is correct: Wave Energy - Similarly, the kinetic energy possessed by huge waves near the sea-shore can
be trapped in a similar manner to generate electricity. The waves are generated by strong winds blowing across the
sea. Wave energy would be a viable proposition only where waves are very strong. A wide variety of devices have
been developed to trap wave energy for rotation of turbine and production of electricity.
Statement 3 is incorrect: Ocean Thermal Energy -The water at the surface of the sea or ocean is heated by the Sun
while the water in deeper sections is relatively cold. This difference in temperature is exploited to obtain energy in
ocean-thermal-energy conversion plants. These plants can operate if the temperature difference between the water
at the surface and water at depths up to 2 km is 20 K (20°C) or more. The warm surface-water is used to boil a
volatile liquid like ammonia. The vapours of the liquid are then used to run the turbine of generator. The cold water
from the depth of the ocean is pumped up and condense vapour again to liquid.
The energy potential from the sea (tidal energy, wave energy and ocean thermal energy) is quite large, but efficient
commercial exploitation is difficult.
Thus, Option B is correct.
26. D
Statement 1 is correct: The oxides of carbon, nitrogen and sulphur that are released on burning fossil fuels are acidic
oxides. These lead to acid rain which affects our water and soil resources. In addition to the problem of air pollution,
recall the green-house effect of gases like carbon dioxide.
Statement 2 is correct: When we burn oil, coal, and gas, we don’t just meet our energy needs—we drive the current
global warming crisis as well. Fossil fuels produce large quantities of carbon dioxide when burned.
Statement 3 is correct: Carbon emissions trap heat in the atmosphere and lead to climate change. In the United
States, the burning of fossil fuels, particularly for the power and transportation sectors, accounts for about three-
quarters of our carbon emissions.

Statement 4 is correct: When we burn oil, coal, and gas, we change the ocean’s basic chemistry, making it more
acidic. Our seas absorb as much as a quarter of all man-made carbon emissions. Since the start of the Industrial
Revolution (and our coal-burning ways), the ocean has become 30 percent more acidic. As the acidity in our waters
goes up, the amount of calcium carbonate—a substance used by oysters, lobsters, and countless other marine
organisms to form shells—goes down. This can slow growth rates, weaken shells, and imperil entire food chains.
Ocean acidification impacts coastal communities as well. In the Pacific Northwest, it’s estimated to have cost the
oyster industry millions of dollars and thousands of jobs.
Thus, Option D is correct.
27. A
Statement 1 is incorrect: Its is a sub-regional cooperation organisation comprising India and five ASEAN countries,
namely, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
Statement 2 is incorrect: It envisages project-based cooperation among member countries and not observer
countries.
Statement 3 is correct: The MGC SOM reviewed the progress made since the 9th MGC Ministerial Meeting held in
Singapore on 2 August 2018 in all seven areas of cooperation - tourism and culture; education; science and
technology; traditional medicine and health; agriculture and allied sectors; water resources management;
transportation and communication; and small and medium enterprises.
Thus, Option A is correct.
28. B
Statement 1 is incorrect: All organisms such as plants, animals, microorganisms and human beings as well as the
physical surroundings interact with each other and maintain a balance in nature. All the interacting organisms in an
area together with the non-living constituents of the environment form an ecosystem. Thus, an ecosystem consists
of biotic components comprising living organisms and abiotic components comprising physical factors like
temperature, rainfall, wind, soil and minerals.
Statement 2 is correct: For example, if you visit a garden you will find different plants, such as grasses, trees; flower
bearing plants like rose, jasmine, sunflower; and animals like frogs, insects and birds. All these living organisms
interact with each other and their growth, reproduction and other activities are affected by the abiotic components
of ecosystem. So a garden is an ecosystem. Other types of ecosystems are forests, ponds and lakes. These are
natural ecosystems while gardens and crop-fields are human-made (artificial) ecosystems.
Thus, Option B is correct.
29. D
Statement 1 is correct: It is maintained by International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural resources.
Statement 2 is correct: It is a source book that keeps record of all endangered animals and plants.
Statement 3 is correct: India maintains a Red Data Book for plants and animals found in India.
Thus, Option D is correct.
30. C
Statement 1 is correct: These two different structures result in diamond and graphite having very different physical
properties even though their chemical properties are the same. Diamond is the hardest substance known. Diamonds
can be synthesised by subjecting pure carbon to very high pressure and temperature.
These synthetic diamonds are small but are otherwise indistinguishable from natural diamonds.
Statement 2 is correct: Graphite occurs naturally in this form and is the most stable form of carbon under standard
conditions. Under high pressures and temperatures it converts to diamond.
Statement 3 is incorrect: Diamond is a good conductor of heat but bad conductor of electricity whereas graphite is a
very good conductor of electricity.
Thus, Option C is correct.

Statement 2 is correct: As both a social and environmental program, it aims to ensure that farming – particularly
smallholder farming – is economically viable by enhancing farm biodiversity and ecosystem services. It reduces
farmers’ costs by eliminating external inputs and using in-situ resources to rejuvenate soils, whilst simultaneously
increasing incomes, and restoring ecosystem health through diverse, multi-layered cropping systems.
Statement 3 is correct: Government of India has been promoting organic farming in the country through the
dedicated schemes of Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) since 2015-16 and also through Rashtriya Krishi Vikas

Taproot
Taproot, main root of a primary root system, growing vertically downward. Most dicotyledonous plants (see
cotyledon), such as dandelions, produce taproots, and some, such as the edible roots of carrots and beets, are
specialized for food storage. Upon germination, the first structure to emerge from most seeds is the root from the
embryonic radicle. This primary root is a taproot. In plants in which the taproot persists, smaller lateral roots
(secondary roots) commonly arise from the taproot and may in turn produce even smaller lateral roots (tertiary
roots). This serves to increase the surface area for water and mineral absorption.
Fibrous Root
 A fibrous root is a root that consists of groups of roots of similar size and length. They do not penetrate as deeply
into the soil as does a taproot.
 The fibrous root is a feature of plants that are monocotyledons. Unlike the tap root, the primary root produced
during development does not remain, and instead roots, known as adventitious roots, are produced from the
stem of the plant.
 All these roots forming the fibrous root collectively are of equal size and length.

Statement 3 is incorrect: The public institutions will also receive a government grant of ₹1,000 crore, while the
private institutions will not get any funding under the scheme. The private Institutions of Eminence can also come up
as greenfield ventures-provided the sponsoring organisation submits a convincing perspective plan for 15 years.
Thus, Option A is correct.

Statement 1 is correct: Carbon dioxide dissolves in water and reacts with seawater creating carbonic acid.
Statement 2 is correct: The Ocean takes up carbon dioxide through photosynthesis by plant-like organisms.
Statement 3 is correct: Carbonic acid once formed releases hydrogen ions, which combine with carbonate in
seawater to form bicarbonate a form of carbon that doesn’t escape the ocean easily.
Thus, Option D is correct.

Fat soluble vitamins: Vitamins which are soluble in fat and oils but insoluble in water are kept in this group. These
are vitamins A, D, E and K. They are stored in liver and adipose (fat storing) tissues.
Water soluble vitamins: B group vitamins and vitamin C are soluble in water so they are grouped together. Water
soluble vitamins must be supplied regularly in diet because they are readily excreted in urine and cannot be stored
(except vitamin B12) in our body.
Thus, Option C is correct.
