NATIONAL BROADBAND MISSION


• The government has announced a new “mission” aimed at
providing broadband access in all villages in the country by 2022.
• As part of the mission, the government plans to shed 30 km / k of
incremental fiber optic path, while increasing the tower’s density
from 0.42 to 1 tower per thousand inhabitants by 2024.
• The mission involves a stakeholder investment of $ 100 billion
(Rs7 lakhs crore), including Rs70,000 crore from the Universal
Service Obligation Fund (USOF) in the coming years.
• The vision of the national broadband mission is to accelerate the
growth of the digital communication infrastructure, bridge the
digital divide, facilitate digital empowerment and inclusion and
provide accessible and universal access to broadband for all.

• Furthermore, a broadband availability index will be developed to
measure the availability of the digital communications
infrastructure within a State / UT.
• The government on 18 December, 2019 launched the National
Broadband Mission which aims to accelerate the growth of digital
communications infrastructure, bridge the digital divide and
provide accessible and universal broadband access for all.
• The main goal of the NBM is to provide broadband access to all
villages by 2022.
• National Broadband Mission aim is to 60000 villages connect
across India with 7 lakhs per annum with 10% contribution from
state revenue over a period of 3-4 years.
• Through Bharat Net, broadband services have reached 142,000
blocks and the national broadband mission aims to offer
broadband for all by 2022, including remotely located hospitals,
schools and post offices.
