India and World Bank Sign $250 Million
Agreement To Boost Rural Incomes
 The World Bank and the Indian Government have signed a $250-million agreement for the National Rural Economic
Transformation Project (NRETP)

 Key focus of the project will be :

1. to promote women-owned and women-led farm and non-farm enterprises across value chains
2. to enable them to build businesses that help them access finance markets and networks
3. to generate employment

The National Rural Economic Transformation Project (NRETP) is an additional

financing to the $500 million National Rural Livelihoods Project (NRLP) which
was approved by the World Bank in July 2011

India bans import of solid plastic waste
 India has prohibited the import of plastic waste into the country, including in Special Economic Zones (SEZ) and by
Export Oriented Units (EOU)

 The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change amended the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management &
Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016 in order to strengthen the implementation of environmentally sound
management of hazardous waste in the country

 India’s plastic imports had increased from 12,000 tonnes in 2016-17 FY to 48,000 in the 2017-18 FY

While India has recycles a higher percentage of its plastic waste than
most countries, 44% of its plastic waste is still not recycled

Google launches ‘Bolo’ to tutor children to read

 Google has unveiled a new app Bolo that aims to help children in primary school learn to read in Hindi and English

 The free app has been launched in India first, uses Google’s speech recognition and text-to-speech technology

 The app features an animated character Diya, who encourages children to read stories aloud and helps if the child is
unable to pronounce a word

 It also lauds the reader when he/she completes the reading.

PM inaugurates IOC's Ennore LNG terminal
 Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated Indian Oil Corporation’s Rs 5,150 crore LNG import terminal at Ennore
in Tamil Nadu

 The Ennore terminal is the first LNG terminal on the east coast in South India that will serve customers in the southern
and eastern region

 Tamil Nadu will be the biggest beneficiary with the LNG to be supplied to customers

 Indian Oil, through its joint venture company Indian Oil LNG Pvt. Ltd, has developed this 5-million tonnes per annum
(mtpa) capacity LNG terminal

PM inaugurates Maharashtra's second Metro Rail
in Nagpur
 Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a 13.5 km stretch under phase I of the Metro Rail in Nagpur, making it
the second city in Maharashtra after Mumbai to get a Metro Rail

RBI notifies 2% interest subsidy scheme for short-
term crop loans
 The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has notified the norms for banks with regards to two per cent interest subvention or
subsidy for short-term crop loans during 2018-19 and 2019-20

 RBI has decided to offer interest subvention of 2 per cent per annum to lending institutions to provide short-term crop
loans up to Rs 3 lakh to farmers at an interest rate of 7 per cent

 This interest subvention of 2 per cent will be calculated on the crop loan amount from the date of its
disbursement/drawal up to the date of actual repayment of the crop loan by the farmer or up to the due date of the
loan fixed by the banks whichever is earlier, subject to a maximum period of one year

 Under the scheme, an additional 2 per cent interest subvention is provided to farmers repaying loans promptly

RBI eases business guidelines for white label ATMs
 RBI has eased business guidelines for white label ATMs

 With this , RBI has allowed companies that manage these machines to source cash directly from the central bank, offer
non bank services like bill payments and advertise even non financial products in their premises, increasing the
revenue earning scope for these companies

 White label ATM Operators (WLAO), can now source cash directly from RBI offices and currency chests, and will no
longer be dependent on sponsor banks for procurement of cash

Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board inks cooperation
agreement with IFC
 The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) has signed a Cooperation Agreement with the International
Finance Corporation (IFC) to train professionals ,the pact runs through June 30 , 2021

 The agreement will enable IFC to assist IBBI to further build the capacity of insolvency professionals, and insolvency
professional agencies for the purposes of the Code

 The pact calls for organizing workshops and training for insolvency professionals and IBBI officers, training the trainers,
development of a national insolvency Programme besides insolvency and valuation examinations

Expansion of the star labelling programme
 Ministry of Power has expanded its ambitious Standards & Labelling (Star Rating) program for Energy Efficient
Appliances to cover the Microwave Ovens and Washing Machines

 The Star Labelling Programs has been formulated by Bureau of Energy Efficiency , which is a statutory body under the
Ministry of Power, which assists in developing policies and strategies with the primary objective of reducing the energy
intensity of the Indian economy

 The labelling of programme for washing machine and microwave ovens will be implemented on a voluntary basis and
will be valid up to December 31, 2020

 Any model/brand of washing machine or a microwave oven can avail star rating on a scale of 1 to 5 based on test report
from NABL or equivalent labs subsequent to scrutiny by the BEE.
