IELTS Writing Task 2: CONSUMERISM

1. More and more people want to buy famous brands with clothes, car and other
items. What are the reasons? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?
2. In some countries, small town-centre shops are going out of business because
people tend to drive to large out-of-town stores. As a result, people without cars
have limited access to out-of town stores, and it may result in an increase in the use
of cars. Do you think the disadvantages of this change outweigh its advantages?
3. People are living in a ‘throwaway society’, using things for a short time and then
throwing them away. What are the causes of this? What problems does it lead to?
4. Many people say that we now live in “consumer societies” where money and
possessions are given too much importance. Others believe that the consumer
culture has played a vital role in improving our lives. Discuss both views and give
your opinion.
5. Online shopping is increasing dramatically. How could this trend affect our
environment and the kind of jobs required?
6. People nowadays work hard to buy more things. This has made our lives
generally more comfortable, but many traditional values and customs have been lost
and this is a pity. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
7. Nowadays, people buy a lot of unnecessary manufactured products. Is this a
positive or negative development? What are the effects of this on individuals and on
society?
