No.7: ’Remembrances’ (‘Efterklang’) from Lyric Pieces Book X, Op. 71

- composed and published 1901

- Last piece in the last book

Thematic material
- One principal theme, which is a variation of the main theme of the first lyric piece, Arietta,
from Book I, op.12 (1867).

- Same material beginning and ending the lyric pieces, from op.12 to op.71: a true
‘remembrance’, looking back to 34 years ago.

- Efterklang in Norwegian literally translates to “reverberations”: the continuing resonance of

a sound. —> The continuing resonance of the melody across a large span of time:
representing a memory that persists.

Form
- Ternary: A(B)A’.

- However, B isn’t really new thematic material, more of a developmental section of the
principal theme: modulation, taking theme to remote keys, fragmentation

- Key scheme:

- A: Eb->Ebm, cadence unresolved

- B: Ebm-> D (common-tone Gb/F#), D->Bb (common tone D), Gb, seq. transposition to V

- A’: Eb, cadence in tonic

Performance issues
- Pedalling choices: There’s one pedal marking at the beginning - how to interpret?

- Main theme is a lot of repeated notes - needs good shape, flow, and direction of melody

- Paying attention to unique harmonic shifts
