MATH 100 A SSIGNMENT #1

Instructions

I highly recommend that you complete this assignment a couple of days before the quiz. This will give you
plenty of time to make sure you understand the material. Quiz questions will be very similar to:

• Textbook questions.
• Instructor questions.

Some suggestions for solving homework problems:

• Read the relevant sections in your textbook before attempting these problems.
• Do your rough work on scratch paper.
• If at first you cannot seem to understand/do a problem, leave it and come back to it at a later time.
• When you are solving a problem, DO NOT simply try to mimic an example from the notes/textbook. Ask
yourself questions; convince yourself that you understand what the question is asking you to do.
• Constantly challenge yourself: to ensure that you truly understand a given problem/solution, explain
it to a classmate. If you cannot convince them, then you probably did not understand the problem well
enough!
• If you find one solution, try to find another (a simpler solution may reveal itself).
• When you find a solution, try to see it as a whole without all the little details.
• Do questions in order and clearly label question and section numbers.
• Grade your own assignment when solutions are posted. Catch your mistakes now when the stakes are
low rather than making them on exams.

To obtain maximum marks on the quiz, your answer should be in a form that another student could
understand without undue effort: a poorly expressed but correct result is not sufficient.

Examples From Lectures

Note: Every week, I will give partial solutions to some examples during the lectures and I will ask you to fill
in the details and give a complete solution on your own time. You can expect to be tested on them on midterms
and the final exam!

Textbook Questions
• § 0.2: 2-50 (do every even numbered problem), 60
• § 0.3: 2-60 except 37, 38, 39, and 40. (again, try as many of the even numbered problems as you can,
especially those that involve absolute value!.

Instructor Questions
1. Finish the exercises from class.
2. Solve the following for x and express your answer in interval notation.
