Traditionally worn in the Mountain Province of the Philippines, the Pasiking
or Sangi is an indigenous basket backpack made from split rattan with
bamboo reinforcement at the base. The entire bag portion is woven rattan. The water-proof covering is made from the extracted fibers of a very long- leafed pineapple plant. It is used to carry goods and men’s belongings and also, even if carrying nothing, or being used just a rain coat. It is also a multi-purpose bag used in farm work or used simply in travelling or just an everyday backpack. The pasiking is also known for its durability even in inclement or rainy weather since the rattan contracts when wet, making the weave tighter and less prone to splitting.
