Background

“Magnetic drum separators are important magnetic separators that removes ferrous metal

from dry bulk products in free-flowing processing systems. They are self-cleaning unit consisting

of drums and housing normally of stainless steel. The magnets used by the magnetic drum

separators are either ceramic magnets or rare earth magnets.[1] The magnetic drum separators are

available both in single or double drum configuration. Applications The magnetic drum separator

is ideal for separating iron particles from granules & powders It is widely used in the following

industries:

•Glass •Ceramic •Chemical •Fertilizer •Plastic •Food industry •Iron and steel slag treatment

•Reduced pyrite ash separation •Calcined ilmenite production Metal powder production”

The various magnetic separators are drum, cross-belt, roll, high-gradient magnetic separation,

high-intensity magnetic separation, and low-intensity magnetic separation types.[2]

Procedure
Made the slip of the ceramic materials of the composition as that assigned in the lab. Turned on
magnetic separator induced the current and developed magnetic flux in it. poured the slip slowly
on the drum of the magnetic separator and collected water and non-magnetic particles in one
bucket at the bottom. Repeated it three times same by again used the slip that collected in the
bucket at bottom. Turned off the magnetic field of the magnetic separator by removing the current
of the separator. Iron is collected in the 2nd bucket at the bottom by throwing water on the drum to
remove the maximum iron from the drum.dried the collected material in the oven Then calculate
the efficiency of magnetic separator.

Observation and calculation

Weight of iron=4gram
Weight of silica = 20gram
Weight of clean & dried filter paper = 1.57 g

Weight of Fe & filter paper after 15 min heating = 6.6 g

After recovery

“Weight of Fe = 6.11-1.99 = 4.12 g

4.12
% recovery = (20+4) × 100

% recovery = 17.16%”

Table 01: %recovery of magnetic separator

Sr no composition %iron content % recovery

1 Silica and iron 16.67 17.16

4|Page
Result
The efficiency of the magnetic separator is 17.16%

Discussion
“From the above calculation it has been observed that efficiency of magnetic separator is

17.16out of 100%. Its means that this magnetic separator return 17.16 magnetic particles it may

be more or lesser than 58.33%. Some silica particles also retained, its means that magnetic

separator not return 100% iron..”
