2. Face-to-face learning can be defined as the traditional method of learning. The learning
methods are face-to-face, which is learners meet and communicate directly with the teacher.
In face-to-face learning, teacher is the centered of learning process and the learning process
held in the classroom. Learning supported by online technology means that the learning
process is using Internet connection. Learning supported by mobile technologies also known
as mobile learning (m-learning) is the process of learning content by using mobiles. Mobile
learning supports, with the help of mobile devices, continuous access to the learning process.
This can be done using devices like your phone, laptop or tablet.
So, the differences face-to-face, online learning and mobile learning is about the
flexibility. While face-to-face (traditional) learning requires learners to be at a certain place
like in classroom at a specific time & date, online learning and mobile learning doesn’t, but
these three learning methods are very important to use and are related to each other.

160 characters to be sent to other phone users. Some producers has expanded the
ability of SMS to allow sending simple picture messages. These images are small
bitmap images, not photographs, and can be selected from an internal library or sent
to a telephone from another suitable device.

6. Mobile learning can be many things to different groups of people. Superficially, it appears
from the outside to be learning via mobile devices such as Smartphone, MP3 players, laptops
and tablets. Certainly, these are important in enabling mobile learning. But mobile learning is
more than just using a mobile device to access content and communicate with others. it is
about the mobility of the learner.
For learning:
Many ways to access materials or other information to learning knowledge example if the
students need more specific answer, the students can searching the material in Google by
computer or Smartphone. Sometimes not only for searching now the students can get
information from e-book.
For learner:
In Riau especially in Pekanbaru has “Universitas Terbuka”. The university has the function of
making it easier for people who are already working to get a bachelor's degree. This
university is very flexible because all meetings, learning and assessments are only on mobile
phones. this is very helpful for people who cannot come directly to study.
For subject:
For mobile users to learn a large selection of subjects that can be accessed all depending on
the user's needs, such as science, social, language, history, economic and business, and etc.
For situation:
For mobile learning users they can access wherever and whenever they want. Every time they
can access the information.
7. Mobile learning technologies provide ways of enhancing the teaching and learning of
specific subjects. There has been some preliminary work in schools (Hine et al. 2004) and
some in higher education. Mobile learning can take education back out into the home, the
workplace and the community. Mobile learning can be spontaneous, portable, personal. For
the example, At the Pennsylvania State University at Delaware County Geoscience students
now use PalmOne PDAs to enter field data straight into a spreadsheet for analysis rather than
using paper and-pencil first, followed by transcription to a PC later.
This situations are appropriate for mobile learning ; it can be informal, unobtrusive,
ubiquitous and disruptive. It takes us much, much nearer to ‘anytime, anywhere’ learning but
it is still too early to predict how our understandings of learning and teaching will evolve as a
consequence and long distance is not problem.
It is the case that large numbers of these students spend a substantial part of their courses off
campus in placements gaining practical experience. All these activities present challenges
that mobile technologies can meet. Learners need continued access to content, or course
material and resources, whilst in the workplace and they may need continued access to other
learners within their on-line community. They need to gather data and complete assignments
whilst in the workplace and they need support with personal information management in a
novel environment. How institutions eventually support these learners will depend partly on
the overall mix of media and methods used by the courses, partly on the specifics of the
institutions, the subjects and the courses and partly on the technology. Students will need to
synch and back up their PDAs and will need to transfer data. The students may or may not
own their own networked PCs; they may or may not come onto campus at frequent intervals.
8. Didactic is a theory of learning and, in a broad sense, the theory and practice of the
application of learning. Discursive interaction is what happens in education is that learners,
perhaps facilitated by a teacher or a moderator, come to a greater understanding of their
subject by shared exploration and discussion. In face-to-face teaching, this takes place during
seminars, discussions and tutorials. The differences between didactic and discursive mobile
learning is:
Didactic content: In face-to-face teaching, this takes place using lectures, books and
handouts whilst in technology supported learning it takes place using web pages,
computer-assisted learning packages or virtual learning environments. Mobile
learning already offers a similar range of choices.
Discursive interactions: In face-to-face teaching, this takes place during seminars,
discussions and tutorials. In the course of the last ten to fifteen years, the use of
technology, especially networked computers used by distance learning students, has
provided increasing support and richness for this discursive element of learning.

Lack of a ‘back’ button on many internet-enabled handsets makes it difficult
to browse the web in ways that people are accustomed to on their desktop or laptop
computer. Nielsen’s verdict on mobile usability in 2003 was that, ‘The latest mobile
devices reagonizingly close to being practical, but still lack key usability features
required for mainstream use’ (Nielsen 2003: 1). According to Nielsen, in some parts
of the world there are persistent problems with service provision, constraining the
ability to use a connected mobile device anywhere, anytime. He goes on to say that
online services such as e-mail should be ‘reconceptualized’
For mobile devices through better filtering of messages and summarisation
services that highlight urgent messages needing to be read while away from one’s
desktop computer. Physical aspectsof a device, such as a wheel for scrolling, also
need to be refined to take account of common user actions such as wanting to ‘flick’
through pages of text. These are all very pertinent remarks, showing that now and
over the next fewyears,users may be faced with some difficulties surrounding the use
of a mobile device. Any problems encountered will depend on the device itself, users’
familiarity with it and its suitability for particular activities or tasks.
Usability issues in computer systems generally have been researched over
several decades now and there are many good practice guidelines, but these relate to
desktop systems and they have mostly been developed within the human–computer
interaction research community or by practitioner designers. It is not simply a case of
taking such guidelines and applying them to mobile devices. The following are some
of the new factors that have to be taken into consideration:
• The paradox that a ‘personal’ device may not be owned by its user
• A new way of communicating, e.g. Short Message Service (SMS) and endless
new acronyms
• Mobile devices form part of a way of working that involves other devices
• Bystanders can feel annoyed when mobile phones are used in public.
There were, however, some issues with the weight of the device and short
battery life. In a higher education context, Corlett and Sharples (2004) report that pen
input on a Tablet PC was useful but unreliable. Taylor (2004) explains that from an
evaluator’s point of view, what is important is the effectivenesswith which learners
are able to achieve their goals and complete learning activities, irrespective of the
specific devices they are using.
2. Issues of Accessibility
Before students can engage in any mobile learning activity, they must first be
able to effectively access and interact with the actual mobile device. Therefore,
bybeing aware of any technical barriers that may restrict the use of a mobile device,
educators and trainers can provide disabled students with strategies and technical
solutions to tackle and overcome these issues. When investigating the accessibility of
mobile learning devices, the principles of Universal Design have been used as tools
for discussion of the range of factors involved. These principles of Universal Design
are:
Equitable Use: The design must be useful and marketable to people with diverse
abilities. For example, the learning content must be such that older students,
students with disabilities and students with English as a second language could all
use it.
Flexibility in Use: The design must accommodate a wide range of individual
preferences and abilities. An example would be content that allows a studentto
choose different text sizes.
Simple and Intuitive Use: Design must be easy to understand, regardless of the
student’s experience, knowledge, language skills or current concentration level.
An example of this principle would be clear and intuitive control buttons and on-
screen icons.
Perceptible Information: The design must communicate necessary information
effectively to the student, regardless of ambient conditions or the student’s
sensory abilities. An example of this principle would be a text-based description
provided for all videos or animations.
Tolerance for Error: The design must minimize hazards and the adverse
consequences of accidental or unintended actions. An example would be asking
the student to confirm all file deletions.
Low Physical Effort: The design must be used efficiently and comfortably, and
with a minimum of fatigue. An example would be the control of an application
using the hardware or software buttons alone.
Size and Space for Approach and Use: Appropriate size and space must be
provided for approach, reach, manipulation, and use regardless of the student’s
body size, posture, or mobility. An example would be a mobile device that can be
operated comfortably with one hand.
3. Issues of size and portability
Mobile devices should ideally be compact and easy to hold; should be
portableand not too heavy. However, the current trend is to design increasingly
smaller gadgets, mobile phones and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). However, for
students who have lost some sensitivity in their fingers or have manual dexterity
problems, and indeed those who are visually impaired, the small size can make using
the devices extremely difficult. When choosing a mobile device, the priority should be
well designed, clearly identifiable buttons and switches with clear visual and tactile
markings in ergonomic positions.
