Τα θέματα
Δύο τάσεις:
δηλαδή, από την από-ευθυγράμμιση των ψηφοφόρων, έχει κάνει την εμφάνισή
του και το φαινόμενο της αποευθυγράμμισης των θεμάτων.

Τα θέματα που έχουν τη μεγαλύτερη πιθανότητα να επηρεάσουν την
εκλογική συμπεριφορά είναι αυτά που δεν εντάσσονται αυτόματα στις
κλασικές κομματικές διαιρέσεις.

Ο ρόλος των μέσων
Χωρίς τη συμβολή των μέσων οι ψηφοφόροι δεν θα πληροφορούνταν για τα
θέματα.
Bασική λειτουργία τους: «είναι σαν τη δέσμη φωτός ενός προβολέα που
κινείται ακατάπαυστα φέρνοντας συνεχώς το ένα θέμα μετά το άλλο από το
σκοτάδι στο φως» (Lippmann, 1988/1922, σ. 322).
Θεωρία της ημερήσιας διάταξης των Μέσων (agenda-setting theory).
Βασική υπόθεση: οι προτεραιότητες των ΜΜΕ επηρεάζουν τις προτεραιότητες
των ψηφοφόρων. Bernard Cohen (1963) «τα ΜΜΕ δεν μας λένε τι να
σκεφτόμαστε, αλλά για ποιο πράγμα να σκεφτόμαστε».
Η θεωρία της «πλαισίωσης» (framing) αναφέρεται στην έμφαση ορισμένων
παραμέτρων ενός θέματος από τα ΜΜΕ, έτσι ώστε το θέμα να γίνεται
αντιληπτό ως συνέπεια μιας συγκεκριμένης αιτίας (Iyengar, 1991, σ. 11).
Ο τρόπος πλαισίωσης ενός θέματος μπορεί να επηρεάσει τον τρόπο που
αξιολογείται το κόμμα που χειρίστηκε το συγκεκριμένο θέμα.
Θεωρία της «διαδικασίας ιεράρχησης κριτηρίων αξιολόγησης» (priming)
αναφέρεται στην ικανότητα των ΜΜΕ να επηρεάζουν τα κριτήρια με τα οποία
τα άτομα αξιολογούν τα θέματα και τις σχετικές δημόσιες πολιτικές (Miller
and Krosnick, 1997).

Λογοδοσία: (Klingemann, Hofferbert and Budge 1994): Συγκρίνοντας παλιές
και σύγχρονες τοποθετήσεις, τιμωρούν όσους διακρίνονται για ασυνέχεια
και αναξιοπιστία, με άλλα λόγια έχουν αντίληψη και δεν κάνουν τις
επιλογές τους εν κενώ. Με βάση το τελευταίο, «η κατάληψη της εξουσίας
δεν αποτελεί ρεαλιστικό στόχο για τα περισσότερα κόμματα, αν δεν
μπορούν ή τουλάχιστον δεν σκοπεύουν να ακολουθήσουν τις
προγραμματικές τους προτάσεις, τουλάχιστον εν μέρει» (Budge et al, 1987).
