1 Background of Study

Every single person in this world has their own identity. Some people are proud

of who they really are. But, the rest are feeling insecure about their identity. It is because

of other’s point of view in seeing what kind of person they are through their identity.

Every identity has a sort of stereotype from others. The stereotype can be positive and

even negative. Both stereotypes – positive or negative - have influences toward people.

The positive ones can give influences in positive way, while the negative stereotype can

give influences in a complicated way. Some people will live with those stereotype and do

not regard them as a serious thing. However, many of them make efforts to break those

stereotype.

In this case, the negative stereotype can give people some troubles in socializing

with others who have different identity. The negative stereotypes have been built in

others’ minds. It makes those people cannot stop thinking as they should be shunned.

Worse, others will think that these people are kind of jokes. This problem, at last,

becomes a trigger for some people with negative stereotype to defy the humiliation others

make to conclude what king of people they are.

One of the the nation with negative stereotype is Palestine. They are being judge

by others that they are inferior and have no power. While, some of them show to the

world that these stereotype are wrong. They show that they are proud of who they are

with their culture. They have a good life and never become a beggar to other notion.

A state which has no respect for human life, where small children are inculcated

with hate for other peoples and religions and cultures. Where they attend summer camps

in which they are taught that to be a suicide bomber is the highest form of religious
expression. Where they are taken to the front to get themselves shot for the sake of photo

ops, and where their parents get paid blood money for child sacrifice.

The Palestinians are aware more about the negative stereotype that given to them.

They voice to the world about who and how they really are. They voice that they deserve

to get their rights and respect as citizen. They show to the other that they have power and

indigenous.

The issue of the efforts of Palestinian to defy humiliation has been discussed by

many writers in literary works such as novel, short stories, and poems. One of them is

Mahmoud Darwis, in his two poems entitled Identity Card and Passport. The two poems

expose the ways of the Palestinian who represented y the speaker to defy humiliation by

others toward their people through their mindset and attitude.
