A third river, the Kortalaiyar, travels through the northem fringes of the city before draining into the Bay of Bengal, at Ennore. The Adyar fiver and Cooum fiver was intersected by Buckingham canal ‘Adyar river is a non-perennial river which originates from Malaipattu tank, which belongs to polar basin From palar basin it flows through chembarambakkam lake and reaches The Bay of Bengal near Adyar. Within this joumey, the river is connected by surplus water from 40 tanks and lakes. The entire river is lower than the mean sea level. Other than the river, Adyar has multiple ecologically sensitive places such as The Theosophical society, Adyar creek, Thokkapia poonga, Besant gardens and the estuary point connecting Adyar river and Bay of Bengal. During the older days the river and its bank's houses distinct flora and fauna due to the proper ecosystem. But during this recent ast, the ecosystem in and around the river has highly degraded due to some careless human activities. 2015 Flood inundation maping @ flood affected areas Ecological history During the older times, the riverine and estuarine water quality is maintained at a perfect balonced state which gives an appropriate environment for Phyto- plankton, Zooplankton and Nektons to perish in a bal- anced number. These are the aquatic components which were mandatory for a proper aquatic ecosys- tem. These components in-turn helps the other aquat- ic species to perish. Slowly when the settlements start- ed fo grow around this region and due fo the effluents and sewage were led into the river, the aquatic eco- system started degrading. Due to the formation of new settlements and encroachments, the native and distinct flora started to disappear. This further led to the gradual disappearance of many varieties of birds, Before the 20th century, the quibble island was not the same isiand as its now. The history says that during the early 19th century the island was used to house leprosy patients, Later, this island was left unused and it was filed with debris which was used os landifil that led the household wastes from the settlements around. it fur ther lead to the deterioration in ecology around the creek. Deterioration of River From palar basin, the river flows through chembaram- bakkam lake and reaches The Bay of Bengal. Til Thiuneermaiai, the upstream water auaity remains 900d, After the river enters into Pammal, it is com- pletely polluted by industrial effluents from tanneries located there. Downstream Nandambakkam, munici- pal wastewaters are led into the river. Within the 9m stretch between Nondambakkam fo Kotturpuram, multiple sewage outlets and wastewater from the wastewater pumping station adds additional pollution to the waterbody. Another reason for the deterioration of the Adyar river is solid waste being dumped by the settlements in and ‘round the banks. Even sewer outiets are directed fo: wards the river from the slums such as Malligaipco kuppam. Several small-scale industries are located ‘adjacent to the banks, which also led industrial effiu- ents into the river. Hospitals in and around Adyar also dump their medical waste into the river, which makes the water unsuitable for the fishes to breed, and making them stink. 1798 1811 ) A 1894 j yy 899 | 2 | 1959 | Ve Cause for the 2015 Flood The major reason for Chennai flood happened during 2015 is because of the improper master plan, en- ‘croachment on the catchment areas, ilegal construc- tions, choking of water exits and bacly planned or un- implemented projects. During the olden days, Mam- balam tank located at T Nagar acted asa catchment area and received the excessive flood water from Cooum and Adyar river. But these catchment areas were wiped out of existence due fo the ropid increase in urbanization and constructions above the tanks During the flood time, the river should have been acted as a catchment zone and the flood water should be transfered to the sea, which did not happen. The width of the river was minimised due to the encroachments and the depth was also reduced due fo the frequent sediment formation. Hence the river has on poor water carrying capacity and the sandbars formed near the estuary mouth further blocked the fushing water. With reference to the topographical aspects, the settlements that were near the banks were no} highly affected compored to the ones that are not, This is because, a reasonable ‘amount of flood water had been carried out by the river. 1 4 Revitalising Ad % @ ADYAR RIVER POLLUTION MAP si! 7 oH = a s| » " Saw) & Wuditedure™™) Organic Carbon Gépper Ghrertiomi) Nickel 2 # i= ° o ee 2 a bh a hh @ bh @ P = PRM POMPOM PRM POM. To improve the quality of the water these two issues must be addresed fist. Improving the quality of the water's the start for recreating a new and fresh ecosystem POOR WATER QUALITY pollution solid waste .waste water run off pollutions Adyar river, after entering city limits, passes through thickly populated areas for about 12.5 kms before its confivence with the sea. @ source of tannery effivent from pammal the river starts receiving industricl effluents. primariy from tanneries lo- cated near pammal. downstream nandanbakkam, the riverrecieves significant municipal waste waters that primarily form the flow in the channel during the dry period. From nandambakkam to kotturour- am, a number of surface drains as well as overflow severs from waste water pumping stations discharge into the river. proposal For tannery waste, new industrial effluent treating plants such as CETP should be installed. These plants can treat 85% of the total effivents. Remaining waste can be dried and disposed of as solids in a secured landfil. To avoid public defecation common tollels should be constructed. to avoid the household wastes and solid wastes from commercial sectors, necessary action should be taken. To avoid the consequence of these muafiats, at the estuary point, initially the mud flat should be completeley re- moved and an 300 metres groyne should be installed. These groynes will prevent the frequent formation of the mudflat at the estuary region, ECOLOGY POLICY Flood carrying capacity the design flood canying capacity of the estuarine stretch is 1397 cumecs. this is derived considering a design width of 200m, design depth of 3.25 m and design velocity of 213m/s. the mud flats near the mouth reduce the speed of the flood water entering the ocean. this makes flood water entering into the settiement. hence the mudfiats need to be removed. if we remove the mud fiat the adai- fionel advantage is that the impure river water can be diluted.
