Electromagnetically induced transparency

This effect is an important phenomenon in three-level

systems. It arises when a strong control laser on one
transition is used to modify the absorption properties of
a weak probe laser on a second transition. The control
laser creates new dressed states of the combined atom-
photon system due to the Autler Townes effect

Dressed states
Consider a system consist of E.M. field and any atomic
system. For this system we can construc
cvt a Hamiltonian (Atomic part, Field part and Interaction
part). Atomic part is the various energy levels. Field part
is the no. of photons in the field mode. Interaction part is
significant for strong fields that causes the system to
oscillate with well defined frequency called rabi
frequency. So needed to be considered in real systems.
The dressed states are the states of coupled field-atom
system. These states are eigenstates of Hamiltonian
(Atomic + Field + Interaction part) and are characterized
by atomic, field and rabi frequency.
