Ae Fcnmanst. > ‘A Christmas Intrada @ PROGRAM NOTE The celebration of the Nativity has called forth countless songs, dances, carols, plays and combinations of these, involving both vocal and instrumental forces, throughout the centuries intertwining the feeling of radiant joy and infinite tenderness in many different ways. ans A CHRISTMAS INTRADA represents an attempt to portray, in musical terms alone, five contrasting moods associated with the festivities of the Christmas season. These five sections are played without pause. They are: FANFARE: CHRISTUS NATUS EST for brass, chimes, bells and percussion only; LULLABY FOR THE CHRIST CHILD played by the woodwind and saxophones; PROCESSIONAL OF THE KINGS AND SHEPHERDS played by the full group; CAROL FOR THE HOLY NIGHT for woodwinds, saxophones and muted brass; and, finally, WASSAIL AND ALLELUIA beginning with the bells and chimes alone, and gradually growing to include not only the ull group but also antiphonal brass choirs, to bring the entire’ work to 2 joyous and triumphant conclusion. A CHRISTMAS INTRADA was commissioned by the Middle Tennessee State University Band,and dedicated to the bands who annually participate in the Contest of Champions, on the occasion of its 20th Anniversary (1981), The first performance took place on that occasion, at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, October 23rd, 1981, with the U.S, Marine Band, plus antiphonal brass choirs "{) NOTE To CONDUCTOR {twill be noted that all of the music given to the two antiphonal brass choirs in this score has been cued into the regular trumpet and trombone parts in the band or wind ensemble, thereby making the work playable without them. However, it is strongly recommended that these choirs be made available if at all possible, to retain the effect of three separated brass groups. If possible, also, the use of at least four sets of chimes, if available (two to each part ), and four sets of bells ( quadrupling the single part given to this instrument ) would greatly increase the general effect in the first section and the final portion of the last section, where the intended effect is that of all the bells in Christendom ringing together to announce the glad tidings to the world. If such multiple chimes and bells are used, however, there should still be only one of each to a part throughout the remainder of the work, particularly in the second ection and the beginning of the last, in order to secure proper balance. ‘Actual tempi to be chosen must depend on the sostenuto required by each section, and the clarity of the quicker moving passages in the first, third and fifth sections of the muste Especially in the third section, the tempo should only be as fast as all lines can be produced with utmost clarity and distinctness. The second and fourth sections, while slow and stately, must still not drag, however: a feeling of soft, continual motion in the texture must prevail at all times.
