Ofall of Gershwin's music, Porgy and Bess seems to have had a special place in his heart, It certainly is his ongest and most ambitious composition, lasting well over three hours in its complete form. At the time of thepremierein 1935, Porgyand Bess was such an original creation that some people didn't know what to make of it, Was ita Broadway show? Was it an opera? Who had ever heard of a Broadway show with such an expansive score? Who had ever heard of writing an opera with an all black cast, set in the ghettos of Charleston,South Carolina? Or who had ever expected anopera tocontain such atchy, "popular songs? The show was obviously well ahead of its time. It was nota success in that first production, although many of the songs became immediately famous. Porgy and Bess gained in popularity, and at last achieved fame and success on stage in an extensive world tour in the 1950s that featured a young Leontyne Price in the role of Bess. Since that time there have been several revivals of the show on Broadway, a film version, and the piece has also atlast gained full acceptance whereit belongs, in the repertory of the world's major opera companies. about the arranger... It's, hard to imagine anyone in the entire world who hasn't heard a Gershwin song at least once in his/her life. Gershwin had the rare talent of being able to write both popular songs and more “serious musie for the concert stage, and in all his ventures retained a distinctive, original style of his own, Of all of Gershwin’s music, Porgy and Bass scems to have had a special place in his heart, It certainly is his Jongest and most ambitious composition, lasting well over three hours in its complete form. At the time of the premiere in 1935, Porgy and Bess wassuich an original creation that some people didn'tknow what lo make ofit, Was ita Broadway show? Was it an opera? Who had ever heard of a Broadway show with such an expansive score? Who had ever heard of writing an opera with an all black east, set in the ghettos of Charleston, South Carolina? Or who had ever expected an opera tocontainsuch ealchy, "popular" songs?The show was obviously well ahead of its time. It was nota success in tha first production, although many of the songs became immediately famous. Porgy and Bess gained in popularity, and at last achieved fame and success On stage in an extensive world tour in the 1950s that featured a young Leontyne Price in the role of Bess. Since that time there have been several revivals ofthe show on Broadway, a film version, andl the piece hasalsoat ast gained full acceptance whereitbelongs, in the repertory ofthe world's major opera companies. about the arranger... Luther Henderson's talents include composing, arranging, conducting and performing. He has worked on over two dozen Broadway productions in these various capacities, including Ain'! Misbehmoin’, Lena Horne: ‘The Lady and Her Music, Flower Drum Song, Do-Re-Mi, Funny Girl, Hallelujah, Baby and No, No, Nanette. Mr. Henderson's talents have been much utilized in the arena of television and films. He received an Emmy nomination for his work on the Columbia Pictures Television special Ain't Misbehavin’. His Works also well represented by over two dozen recordings. Over the last few years Mr. Henderson has been a principal arranger for the Canadian Brass. Itis through this relationship with the Brass that he feels that he can record for history the jazz idioms that have previously been part of the aural, popular tradition.
