Abstract:
Purvaparadhaja (Karmaja) vyadhi (disease) and Daiwavyapashraya chikitsa (Spiritual therapy) are two important aspects about
diagnosis and treatment mentioned in classics of Ayurveda, Medical astrology is that branch of Vedic astrology which deals with,
hhealth. The horoscope is a blueprint of the whole being, reflecting the complex interaction of body, mind and soul. Where modem,
‘medical science is ata loss or failed, astrology can foresce and chalk out viable solutions. By the complimentary combination of
the wheel of time (Kaluchakra) and the circle of zodiac (Rashichakra) and thereby distinguishing various ailments on various
‘organs as indicated by the zodiac circle, a smart diagnostic methodology has becn instituted by the medical astrology.

Introduction:
Ayurveda has incorporated three types of disease (Vyadhi)
namely Drushtapacharaja, Purvaparadhaja (Karmaja) and
Sankara (Mixed). " Out of them, Karmaja vyadhi can be
treated with the help of Vedie medical astrology. This comes
under daiwavyapashraya chikitsa (spiritual therapy)
‘mentioned in Ayurveda.”
Medical astrology is that branch of Vedic astrology which deals
with health, The twelve signs (Rashis) of zodiac are linked to
the twelve limbs of the body. As said by Dr. Jung “whatever is
bom or done a this moment has the qualities ofthis moment”
When any soul takes birth, at that particular moment an
empirical effec (Prabhava) of the universe (Brahmanda) gets
applied as an impression over that particular bora individual

Astrology and medicine were not, even in the west, regarded as
‘wo separate disciplines until some centuries ago. Before that
all educated persons were broadly familiar with astrology,

philosophy and medicine. Interestingly, whereas astrology
was generally considered to be a reputable occupation,
‘medicine seldom was. Very few people know that Hippocrates,
the father of medicine, said that no one should call himself a
doctor unless he/she was also an astrologer; for no diagnosis
could be made without the help of astrological information on
the patient.
‘Where modern medical science is at aloss or failed, astrology

astrological speculations. After a physician's tests have

doctor can outline the best diet and programme of herbs,
detoxification and nutritional supplements for the individual
toregain good health,
Reviewand Discussion
As mentioned eatlier, three types of diseases are mentioned in
classics of Ayurveda viz. Drushtapacharaja, Purvakarmaja and
Sankara. Drushlapacharaja (Doshaja) are those which
‘manifest in proportion tothe indulgence of Nidans (etiological
factors). Purvaparadhaja (Karmaja) vyadhis manifest due to
Karma i.e, due to disproportion between manifestation and
Nidanas. Sankara vyadhis are manifested due to both,Diagnostic and treatment approach in Ayu
Indulgence of Viruddha medicines to that of nidanas pacifies
Doshaja vyadhi, whereas in Karmaja vyadhis Karmasankshaya
is needed for complete elimination of disease, In Sankara
(Mixed) vyadhis both of them are needed. "
There are three types of therapy — spiritual
(daiwavyapashraya), rational (yuktivyapashraya) and
psychological (satvaavajaya). The spiitual therapy consists of
recitation of mantras, wearing roots and gems, auspicious acs,
oblations, following religious precepts, atonement, fasting,
invoking blessings, falling on (Ihe feet of) the god etc. The
rational therapy consists of rational administration of dit and
ddeugs. Psychological therapy is restraint of mind from the
‘unwholesome objects,"
Our state of health reflects our interaction with our
environment, which on the level of subtle and cosmic forces
includes the influences of the planets, Here, various important
factors which indicate the relationship between astrological
imbalances and disease conditions are reviewd and discussed.

Benefic and Malefic planets (Graha)
Generally, benefic planets usually promote health and malefies
cause disease
Benefic (Saumya) planets ~ Jupiter (Guru), Venus (Shukra),
‘Moon (Chandra), Mercury (Budha)
Malefic (Krura) planets
Rahu, Ketu, Sun (Ravi)
Saturn (Shani), Mars (Mangal),
Malefic planets cause disease owing to their destructive effects,
‘but can increase resistance to disease if well placed. Benelic
planets work to ereate positive health if well placed in the chart
butcan cause disease when poorly placed
Signs (Rashis), Houses/Zodiac sectors (Dwadasha
bhava/Sthana) and Diseases
Rashis and corresponding number's bhava (house) represent or
indicate the body parts of the Kaalapurusha (The deity of time).

Houses of Health and Disease
Forexamining overall health, the Ist house or Ascendantis the
most important factor because itis the house of the body
(Tanulbhava). The S*is the house of postive health, ereativity
and sexual vitality. The 9" isthe house of overall good fortune
thatimproves the healthas wel.
‘An important rule in Vedie astrology is that benefie planets
(Moon, Jupiter, Venus and Mercury) perform best when
located in angular or tine houses (1,4, 5,7,9 and 10), the main
positive houses in the chart. In such positions they aid in
health, physically or psychologically.
On the other hand, malefics in angular and tine houses
damage the body, reduce the good fortune and weaken our
health, The main houses of disease in the chart are houses 6, 8
and 12. The 6° house indicates the diseases that arise mainly
through faulty digestion or weakness. The 8° house indicates
congenital or vitality problems, including catastrophic ot
debilitating diseases and epidemics. The 12*is the house of
lossand indicates weakness, debility or hospitalization,
Planets located in these houses in the birth chart, particularly
benefies, make a person prone to diseases, The lords of these
three houses, particularly the rulers of houses 6 and 8, have the
power to cause disease by their aspects or association,
‘especially with the ascendant and its lord, The lords of houses

‘The ascendant (Lagna) and Disease
The ascendant lord — planet ruling the rising sun
(Lagnadhipati) is the main significator of the body and outer
self. Its position is a key to the overall health and well being of
a person, Generally, it adds strength to any house in which it
happens to be located, but when afflicted, particularly if
located in difficult houses like 6, 8 and 12; it can cause
significant health problems.
When any planet (graha) becomes ascendant lord
(Lagnadhipa), it specifically represents that tissue of the
body which is under its predominant influence.

Isolated planets (ekantika graha) and Disease
‘When any planet is located in difficult houses like 6, 8 and 12it
becomes powerless. If such a planet is afilicted then itis called
as isolated (ekantika). Such a planet causes a disease of the
particular tissue (Dhatu) which it signifies. Such isolated
planets being ascendant lord (Lagnesh) is not mandatory.
Conclusion
After a detailed discussion on factors of medical astrology, itis,
‘concluded that all negative effects, diseases and ironical fate of
‘human beings are the consequences of past evil deeds
‘committed in the previous births, These ate presumed to have
been deposited inthe soul. As far as Vedic medical astrology is
‘concerned the root cause of every diseases (etiology) are
absolutely karmic (Karmaja vyadhis) which is derived out of,
‘unethical, dishonest, brutal, untruthful actions committed in
the previous birth; and its deeds will follow the aspirant
Ganmi). The deeds of past deposit and evil effects will
‘maetaphysically follow soul from births to births as accretion of
sins, This cannot be detected under the system of modern
‘medicine, ‘Therefore whenever and wherever the physical

Ayurveda and its medical astrological aspect.
