Types of Speeches

Preparing Speeches
 The speaker first finds out what he already knows about the topic.
 Then, sourcing information through research.
 The speaker then organizes the speech according to the PURPOSE OF SPEECH.

Speech According to Purpose


1. Expository/ Informative
The purpose is to provide information, history, theories, practical application, etc., that can
and will help the listeners understand something. It can follow different patterns as they are
conveyed:
A. Chronological Pattern – this can be used if you want to present history, evolution or development
of your topic in a sequential order, from past to present.
Ex: 1. Introduction – Attention Getter & Main Point
2. Body – Steps and Years
3. Conclusion – Summary of the points and Memorable Statement.

B. Categorical Pattern – if you want to inform about the main features, descriptions, or categories of
your topic.
C. Cause and Effect Pattern – if you want to inform casual relationship of events or phenomena.
D. Comparison – Contrast - if you want to underscore similarities and differences among objects,
events or concepts.

2. Persuasive Speech- Its goal is to change the Listeners’ opinion, attitude or belief regarding a certain
topic.

Types of Persuasive Speech


1. Speech that Questions Facts
This type questions the existence of a particular event or happening. The speaker poses
questions facts, derives conclusions from different sources and attempts to convince the audience.
2. Speech that Questions Value
This type questions the value of self, family, friendship, religion, government, love and money.
3. Speech that questions policy – questions the current state of things which can impact the future.
4. Speech that refutes – this type either responds to or disapproves the claims of others while
defending and promoting own claims. Example debate.

3. Entertainment Speech
this is to make the listeners smile or feel lighthearted after the speech is enough. The speaker
must lead the audience into looking at something familiar in a totally different and completely
humorous way.
