Itisthe intent of the SIL toaclvise these of ABB C. ices’ position concerning furnace pre: sure tip logic BACKGROUND ‘The previous distribution of SIL 688 w: step in fully addressing all as x philosophy. To assu important cts of furnace pressure that all our customers the opportunity to consider these recommen- his SIL is being reissued with some additional clarifications ay a result of questions evolving from the previous distribution. Previously, the sole philosophy for having a high furnace pressure Master Fuel Trip (MET) was to provide a function to shut off the fuel input following a major presstire excursion to protect against additional damage should the furnace walls be ruptured. However, recent, data indicates that sustained elevated furnace pressures, (though below the previously used trip setpoint), which can occur as a result of unusual oper ¢ to initiate an MFT. Therefore, careful is been given to lowering the absolute psetpoints. Addition: ons mace in this SIL reflect the approaches ta fest (199L) NFPA Standard 85C on furnace explo- sion/implosion prevention (superseding the earlier Stan~ dard 85G on implosion protection); ie., recommenda- tions on the wo-out-of-three transmitter voting logic and fan tripping philosophy during high draft conditions. ABB C-E Services, Inc. Following these practices will minimize the possibility ‘of major furnace pressure excursions while maintaining, unit availability RECOMMENDATIONS Fuel Trips ‘The Furnace Pressu ping Logic should consist of two independent circuits, one set to initiate a M Fuel Trip at a pressure of +6.0 inches pressure) and the other set to ini ata draft of -7. implemented with no time delays Fumace pressure alarm points should be set at +3.0 inches w.g. for b e and -4.0 inches wg. for high fur Some units have incorporated, per ABB C-E recommen- ral speed furnace pressure chart recorders ich to high chart speed on positive and Imace pressure transients. In conjunction with the alarm setpoint changes, the chart speed transfer to high speed should now occur at +3.0 inches w.g. and -4.0 inches wg, Fan Operation/Trips ‘The FD and ID fans should normally continue to operate after a Master Fuel Trip, except when the trip is due to at loss of fans, or when: 1. The furnace pressure reaches or exceeds +6.0 inches wg. (increasing pressure) -AND- at five-minute Post- MIT/Pusge has been completed 2. Twenty seconds or more have elapsed after the MET -AND- furnace dralt decreases to or below -9.0 inches wig, (decreasing pressure). On those units which incorporate FD and ID Fan control directional blocking during positive and negative fur- nace pressure transients, the pressure at which blocking action occurs had traditionally been sett +/~4.0 inches. This value should be reset to +3.0/~4.0 inches w.g. in conjunction with the above alarm and trip setpoint changes. Sensing Devices and Configuration Three pressure switches should he used for each of the three trip setpoints (both MFT’s and the high draft fan, trip). Each pressure switch in each group of three should be connected to a separate pressure tap in the same furnace cavity. Activation of two-out-of-three switches for high furnace pressure or high furnace draft should initiate a furnace pressure trip, resulting in a master fuel trip. Activation of two-out-of-three pressure switches for high furnace draft (9.0 in. w.g.) should cause tripping of the FD/ID Fans if activated 20 seconds or more following an MFT Note that pressure switches are recommended for the critical tripping functions. Divided furnace units need, to monitor only one furnace half as there is sufficient flow area between furnace halves to allow rapid pres- sure equalization in under one second during rapid pressure excursions, Directional blocking, switching to high speed, and alarm functions can be activated from signals derived from furnace pressure Iransmitters, recorder Figure 1 depicts the proper furnace pressure monitoring, configuration Furnace Pressure Switch/Logic Configuration SUMMARY Function Pressure Draft Switch Logic MFT 60" wg. 7.0.w.g. 2 out of 3 Count Alarms 33.0" wR 4.0 wg, Directional block on FD/ID fan controls. +30" wig, -A0 weg, ‘Transfer dual speed furnace presure recorder to high speed. 43.0 W.g. 40" wg Trip of ED/ID fans. after 5 minute Pos-MET purge +6.0w.g.
