Ly AFEORS TESTS ON BENTONITE DEPERMINATION OF LIQUID LIMIT This test is conducted as per IS 2720 (Part 5) - 1985. Following steps are followed : sT Take about 1010 ams. of bentonite sample and dry it in oven for 24 hrs. STEP -2: Take about 50 gins. of this oven dry sample and soak in distilled water for 24 hs, evaporating dish or on the flat aa to forma a uniform paste. ST The paste shall have a consistency that will require 30,10 35 drops of the cup to close the required closure of the standard groqvs: This requires 10 be done more cautiously, Initially, it will require more wials,to achieve the Sesired no. of drops, The no. of drops required to cause the groove close for the length of 12 mm, shall be recorded. STEP -5 For Moisture Content determination, take some sample from the cup in yo aluminium / metal cans and weigh it Keep ee cans in oyen for drying for 24 hrs. and weigh it.” STEP -G: Alter the moisture content of paste and repeat the STEP - 4 & 5 to obtain another four nos. of moisture content determination in the range of 10 to as a (ArFcOns) LAM ‘Flow Curve’ shall be plotted on semilogarithmic graph representing moisture content on the arithmetical scale and the no. of drops on the logarithmic scale. The flow curve is a straight line drawn as nearly us possible through the four or more plétied points. The moisture content corresponding to 25 drops as read from the curve and shall be reported as the Liquid Limit of the Bentonite, lide A graph for Liquid Limit determination and the observation sheet is enclosed for Moisture Content determination. DETERMINATION OF SAND CONT) Ee T About 50 gms. of oven dry bentonite sample is taken and the same is subjected to wet sieving. ‘he portion retained on 75 micron IS sieve is oven dried and from the same Sand Content is determined WELL The volume of 2 gms. of bentonite powder is detenpined by pouring it in 100 ml, ‘distilled water and in 10 ml. of kerosene separately and observe the volume in both the cylinders after 24 his, the Differential Free Swell (DFS) is calculated by using following equation DFS = V2-VI x 100 vi where, eee Volume of 2 ems. of bentonite powder in kerosene V2 =. SWI NG 2 gms. of dry bentonite is taken and divided into 10 equal parts, Same is dropped part by part into 100 ee of Water in a measuring evlinder and the swollen volume of the bentonite is measured after 24 hrs. Higher the swollen volume, better the bentonite. DE’ RMINA TION OF pH VALUE PH value of the slusry is determined by using the pH paper strips which are commercially available. DETERMINATION OF DENSITY The density is measured by Hydrometer having a range of 1.001 to 1.100 guvml. ‘The slurry sample is taken in a 1000 cc cylinder and the hydrometer is inserted into this suspension. The calibration shown on the hydrometer directly gives the density in guv/ml. at a ‘The minimuni density value in the specification is given ut 1.034 ym/mi.
