SINSTALLATION 8.1 General Although fire extinguishers ere not permanent and immovable fitings in a structro, these from a part of the whole system of fire protection and should receive ‘consideration for provision atthe design stage. In some cases, it may be necessary for the extingnishers to be housed in readily accessible and unlocked receptacles, clearly visible and unobtrusive, 8.2 Excepting particular eases where, as stated in 7A. it may be necessary forthe extinguisher to be housed in specially prepared positions, no structural work is generally involved in the installations of the extinguishers dealt with in this standard as this normélly takes place upon the completion of the ‘constructjon, The general sequence of the building construgtion"operation is not, therefore, usually affected! Where a special recess is to be formed in @ wal pevsion shoul be made the work progress 9 SELECTION OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS ‘Various typés of fire extinguishers specified in this standard are of value but all are not equally effective ‘on all types of fire, For this reason, the nature of ‘contents of building, the processes carried out therein tne the types of fre which may occur sll be taken into consideration while solecting fire extinguishers. For alt practical purposes, the basic types of fires can be grouped into following four elasse a) Class A fires — Fires involving solid combustible materials of organi natace such ‘as wood, paper, rubber, plastics, etc, where the cooling effect of water is essentiat for extinction of fires. by Class B fires —- Fires involving flammable tiguids of liquefiabte solids or the like where ‘ blanketing effect is essential ©) Glass € fires — Fires involving flammable ‘tases under pressure including liquetied gases, where it is necessary to inhibit the tuching gas at fast rate with an inert gas, powder or vaporising liquid for extinguishment. 4) Class D fires — Fires involving combustible metals, such as magnesium, aluminium, zinc, sodium, potassium, ete, when the barring metals are reactive to water and water containing agents and in certain cases carbon dioxide, halogenated hydrocarbons and ordinary dry powders. These fires require special media and techniques to extinguish, NOTE — tie important to deve eleston and we of inguiser on ling slectieal istalltions. The guise tathve pease cece] somvitext ‘ould only be ase. 10 SUITABILITY OF PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS 10.1 The types of extinguishers mentioned below ‘against each class of fre are generally most suited. Details of suitability ss @ guide of each type of ‘extinguisher is shown in Table 3. It may, however, be noted that ths is only for guidance and does not cover special cases 8) Class fires — Water, foam, ABC dry power ‘and halacarbons. 1b). Class 8 fires — Foam, dry powder, clean agent ‘and carbon dioxide exting ©) Class Cfires— Dry power, clean agent and ‘earbon dioxide extinguishers, ) Class D firés — Extinguishers with speciel dey ponder for metal fires, 10,2 Where energized electrical equipment is involved in fire, non-conduetivity of the extinguishing medi is of utmost importance, and only extinguishers expelling dry powder, carbon dioxide (without meta! thorn) orelean agent should be used, Once the electrical ‘equipment is de-enorgized, extingvishess suitable for the class of the fire risk involved can be used safely. 10.3 Where cleanliness and contamination of sensitive cleetrcal equipment are of importance or where the sensitivity of the control instruments or electronic equipment and systems are likely to be affected, only ‘carbon dioxide or clean agent type extinguishers shoald be used. 10.4 For fires involving polar solvents and other water miscible flammable liquids, dry powder type or ‘echanietl foam extinguisher with alcohol-resistant foam should be used. 105 Dry powder extinguishers, when used in confined areas may reduce visibility for a few minute, which ray temporarily jeopardize escape, rescue or other ‘emergency action 10.6 Dry powder extinguishers are. probably the most cffeotive medium against Class B fires, bat where the fuel surface is shielded from the powder discharge, they are not effective. Further, the discharge ceases, there is a danger of re-ignition which has to be coustered cithor by continued powder discharge for some more time, or by covering te suraée by foam. Dry powder bing « qvik knock agent, is deal fr tacking tmunning’ or “three-dimensional” fires involving ‘lammable figuids. 10.7 Consideration should be given, for proviging special protecod or teatmentfor extinguisher located in plies exposed 1 unduly cornsve athostienes ot ‘o splashing by contosive fk 108 Appropeiatd élze of extinguishers, including whoslediceleytnoanted type shoul be proved for use depeising upon tazard classification as per the fice ratings given in IS. Moisture causes aking ofthe powder, 8) Itiseven more important tat mixing or croxs- contamination of different types (BC/ABC/ ) of powder be avoided as it may cause chemical reaction resulting in dangerous pressure build-up in the container, Thi reaction may become apparent only ater a few weeks, 6) Allsssing components should be cleaned and properly Tubricated wo prevent leakage afer recharso. 4) Check presnure indicating devices to ascertain thet it pives proper readings ©) Never connect stored pressure extinguisher to be charged directly to the high pressure source. Connecting directly to the high pressure source could cause damage or even rupture ofthe container and may result inthe injury. Only those gas eartsidges which will suit the particular type and capacity of the extinguisher should be used. Do not use higher capacities than recommended. 1) Certin recharging matrils deteriorate with 4ge, expoture to excossve temporature and moisture, Storage of recharge materials for tong, periods should be avoided. 5) Normal workshop compressors deliver ait with high moisture eontent, Moisture taps ‘ill ony remove the moisture pasty, and ma Jed to caking of powder, hydrolysis of halogenated agents, clogging of pressure ‘gauges and internal ccrosion.
