Exercise 1

A CF6-50 turbofan engine operates at T/O-regime ISA SLS. The following engine characteristics are
known:
ṁ = 646 kg/s π f an = 1.6 v a = 0 m/s

The inlet ram recovery is 100%.

1. Find the following geometric inlet parameters using the documentation on p. 2:

• A 0 (highlight area)
• A t h (inlet throat area)
• A 1 (fan inlet area)

2. Determine v 1 analytically and via the isentropic tables in appendix.

3. Estimate the engine bypass ratio.

4. Estimate the power absorbed by the fan.

5. Verify the probability of icing in the inlet throat.

6. Find the additive drag.

7. Discuss the spillage drag.
