Background: Tooth Caries is a disease caused by Streptococcus mutans.

Caries was damage that

happen on hard tissue of tooth which start from email to dentin and continous to pulp and also
have multifactorial etiology which is interaction between host, microorganism, substrat
time.Strawberries (fragaria x ananassa) contain catechin compounds that can inhibit and kill
bacteria by denaturing bacterial cell proteins and decrease the function of protein membranes .The
function of Flavonoids is to damage cell membranes by inhibiting cell membranes synthesis,
forming complex compounds with extracellular proteins, followed by release of intracellular
compounds.

Problem: The problem in this study is the patients with tooth caries.

Objectives: to determine the effectiveness of strawberry extract (fragaria x ananassa) 50%

concentration on the growth of Streptococcus mutans.

Method: This research use true experimental laboratory with post test only control group design.
The research was carried out in ( dari kapan sampai kapan ) at Laboratory Ketintang Baru Road
XVII no.14, Surabaya.

Result: The results show that the average inhibition of strawberry extract (fragaria x ananassa)
with a concentration of 50% on the growth of streptococcus mutans bacteria was 20.61 mm, the
average inhibition power of positive control of triclosan on the growth of streptococcus mutans
bacteria was 22.25 mm, The analysis is 0.024 which means the p value <0.05.

Conclusion: There was significant mean difference in the effectiveness of 50% concentration of
strawberry extract with positive control of triclosan on the growth of Streptococcus mutans.

Keywords: Keywords: Strawberry Extract (Fragaria X Ananassa) and Streptococcus Mutans
