Systems Development: Design, Implementation, Maintenance and Review

System development is the process of designing, implementing, maintaining and

reviewing in order to help your organization achieve its goals. System development can include

designing new systems or changing the existing ones according to the needs of your

organization. Implementation deals with the purchasing, developing or revamping of your

current hardware or software system. Implementation also includes training for its users,

installation, start up and testing. Maintaining ensures that the system is performing in the best

possible way and making changes as needed. In order to maintain your system reviewing

makes sure your system is still doing what it is designed to do meet the organization’s needs

the entire process is what makes up system design.

What is system design and how does it work according to Nelson the idea of design is

the board understanding of what we need and what we are trying to do and implementing that.

(Nelson, 2012, p. 3) When we reference system design to information technology we ask the

question, “How will the information system solve the problem?” (Stair, 2014, p. 592) System

design has two concepts logical and physical design. Logical design deals with the abstract

planning for the best solution. Logical design deals with ideas such as the location of the system

without implicating a specific place. It also tells what process the system will perform in general.

Logical design is set up to be the formulation to the solution to the problem. Physical design

deals with the hardware and physical components to bring the logical design into realization.

(Thario, 2005)

In the developing a system design with the use of new hardware or software you are

often required to do a Request for Proposal (RFP). The RPF is a type of bid that the company

formulates in order to specify the type of resources the company will be using. This includes

both software and hardware in which other companies can present a proposal to accommodate

those resources. (Investopedia, LLC, 2015)

SYSTEM DESIGN 3

System Implementation is the process of taking your ideas and integrating them into

your companies operation. This part of the process is the most time consuming and costly part

of the system design. It starts with the building part of system design to make sure that your

design is accomplishing what it wanted to accomplish. It is the implement of the system to user

and how they function together in response to one another. This process many sometimes

require the hiring or training of employees. Designation of roles should already be decided with

the process of inputs and outputs being defined. Training is one of the most vital parts to the

implementation phase it will provide a smooth transition from the old system to the new system

or into the modification. (System Implementation, 2015)

The final stage of system design is the maintenance and review stage which will keep

your system functioning at optimal levels at all time. The system has to be maintained

throughout its life to maintain its operational capabilities. This includes scheduled and

preventative maintenance this will help to minimize down time. Creating a plan that includes

service parts, system analysis, and proper function will keep your system performing as it

should.

System development is the process of designing, implementing, maintaining and

reviewing in order to help your organization achieve its goals. System development is one of the

most important factors in day to day operation of your business. A well planned out system that

is implemented and maintained can be attributed to the overall success of your company.
