IN COLLABORATION WITH

PENANG, MALAYSIA
&
CENTRE FOR INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY AND MULTIMEDIA
UNIVERSITI SAINS MALAYSIA (USM)
1.0 BACKGROUND :

The Red Crescent Society is a uniform unit carried out as co-curriculum activities in schools in
Malaysia. This society prepares the members not only to be well-disciplined but to have
knowledge in life-saving techniques and first aid. Being a voluntary humanitarian organization, it
is hoped to be able to develop knowledgeable and disciplined volunteers.
The members of the society take part in community services as part of their training in
developing patriotism and willingness to sacrifice their time, effort and money. Through this, we
hope the younger generation will be instilled with humanitarian and harmonious values.
Hence, this International Red Crescent Competition will be a platform to share the various
and varied experiences in community-based activities and health concern from far and near. Not
only will this journal be an interesting activity, it will also be a meaningful experience to its
participants. The journal will directly and also indirectly foster closer ties, better understanding
and strong teamwork.
This competition is conducted in collaboration with the Malaysian Red Crescent Society and
Malaysian Red Crescent Society (Penang). This collaboration started way back in 2013 when
Sekolah Kebangsaan Minden Height organized the National Level Red Crescent Society Camp.
In this event, the Penang State Health Department also contributed their expertise in first aid
procedures. In 2014, the Malaysian Red Crescent Society and Malaysian Red Crescent Society
(Penang) supported the school in organizing the National Level Red Crescent Journal 2014. The
organization of this year’s journal is in fact a continuous linking and interaction programme
between Malaysian Red Crescent Society, the Penang State Health Department and Sekolah
Kebangsaan Minden Height. The same program continued in 2015 where 45 teams from 33
schools participated in the Journal Writing Competition.

2.0 AIMS :

2.1 The aim of this working paper is to get the consent and approval from the Ministry of
Education Malaysia, to organize The International Red Crescent / Red Cross e-Journal
Writing Competition 2016
2.2 The objectives of this programme are to :
i) instill the spirit of volunteering in doing social work activities as a team
ii) expose the Red Crescent members to the planning, implementing and writing of creative
journals in whatever projects being assigned.
iii) involve the Red Crescent members in community related activities.
3.0 BASIC CONSIDERATION

project conducted hands on to help the needy and the underprivileged.

opportunities for community services projects.
3.3 The spirit of volunteering for social work is diminishing fast in the hearts of students.
Students are paying more attention to IT gadgets and the lure of the entertainment world.
Thence, Journal Writing for charitable purposes will therefore help to build a more unselfish
and caring society who are more sensitive to the needs of the needy and the underprivileged.
