Parts of Speech – Adverb

 An adverb is a word that describes - or modifies, as grammarians put it - a

verb, an adjective or another adverb.
 It is used to change or qualify the meaning of an adjective, a verb, a clause,
another adverb, or any other type of word or phrase with the exception of
determiners and adjectives that directly modify nouns.

We know that,

 A verb is an action word (speak, run, walk, play)

 An adjective is a descriptive word that describes a noun (pretty,
happy)
 A noun is a person, place or thing (Boy, Chennai, cow, mom)
 Whereas it is easy to see how adverbs describe, or modify, verbs,
since they simply explain most about the action.

Kinds of Noun

Adverbs of Manner

This kind of adverb describes the manner by which something was done or
something happened. Adverbs of manner answer the question “How?”

Examples:

 He ran fast.
 He wrote quickly.
 They spoke fluently

Fluently modifies the verb “spoke”

Adverbs of Place

Adverbs of place simply answer the question “Where?” Here are some
Examples:

 He plays here.
 He walked forward.
 She works there.

Here, we can see that adverbs of place are positioned right after the verb or after
the object of the verb.

Adverbs of Time

Aside from answering when an event occurred, adverbs of time also

answer questions like, “How long?” and “How often?”

Examples:

 He comes here daily

 He came one hour ago
 We are playing now.

Adverbs of Degree

This kind of adverb indicates the degree at which something will be done.
It tells something about the intensity.

Examples:

 He talks too much

 You are partly correct
 You are quite wrong

Common Errors with Adverbs and Adjectives

People often mistakenly use adjectives when they should use an adverb and
vice versa.

Bad Vs Badly

Example:

 He behaved very bad (Incorrect because it is modifying or describing

the verb ‘behaved’)
 He behaved very badly. (Correctly modifies verb)
 His behavior is bad. (This is also correct because bad is an adjective
here)

Good Vs Well

 The good girl (Good is an adjective that should modify nouns)

 He sings well (Well is an adverb that modifies a verb)
 The well educated boy (It’s an adjective)
